NJ Tax Assessor Exam

I have taken the exam, and I have passed the exam.

nj tax assesor

Congratulations Timothy.

I am taking the exam at the end of the month. The state provided me with the assesors manual so I can study, however, have not taken any official classes (rutgers courses).

What areas should I focus on?

Thanks in advanced for any help

NJ Tax Assessor Exam

I would reccomend taking the review class that Rutgers offiers. THe test is heavy on the dates, laws, and knowing the exceptions for the seniros, retired vets, and disabled vets.

THe second half is all appraisal information. You shoudl knwo how to do everhting in the appraisal side on a regular cal. The HP12C is not allowed in. Know how to build up a cap rate, how to find a lot on a tax map via directions from the paragraph they supply.

If you are not currently working in the tax office or have taken the classes, or an appraiser the test will be very hard to pass.

Thanks for the info Timothy. I was under the impression that you could only take the review class if you took the the other 3 classes. Is this true?

TImothy, one last question. What format is the test given in? multiple choice, essay?

NJ Tax Assessor Exam

It is in the multiple choice format.

I took it and passed about six years ago without the Rutgers classes, but it's a difficult exam. Many of the people taking the exam had already failed numerous times. One mistake I made was studying the administrative material almost exclusively and ignoring the appraisal material since I already had 20 years of appraisal experience. I found some of the appraisal questions to be tricky since they were from an assessor's perspective.

Hope this helps!
Michael
