what's the best/quickest way to get this done? i've been doing this for almost 9 years now and i never got myself certified (residential).

I'm getting ready to apply for my certification and needed certain college courses myself. I took them online at APU.EDU, which services the U.S. military. They offer 8 week courses starting on the first of every month and the cost is $250 per credit hour. The classes I needed were Business or Real Estate Law and Finance. Each course was 3 credit hours so my total cost was $1,500 for two classes. It may seem like a lot, but compared to other universities, this was the best option I could find.

Online classes are not as complicated as you might think it is. I was very intimidated at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze. I called and the rep took me through just about everything. Very easy!

Easiest and least expensive way to start earning a degree is via Community College, then to transfer and complete the last two years at a four-year institution. If you plan to continue appraising, why not major in finance and minor in business administration-both courses of study should come in handy. ;)

The best way to get the credits are to take CLEP exams. All you do is take a test and if you pass then you get the college credit. There is also a website called straighterline.com where you can take the classes online. I know several people who have used both with great success.

I am not certain, but I think a friend of mine called our state regulator in California (OREA) and asked if the CLEP exam could be used; the answer was no.

So, I'd advise the OP to call OREA and ask first. If they say it is ok, I agree that CLEP would be the quickest method.

Good luck!

OP - I just checked the education requirements of California and they do accept CLEP examinations.

They have study guides you can purchase to help you pass the material.

I really utilized CLEP in college and even had a friend who was a Junior before he stepped on campus.

Good luck,

thanks caligirl, i plan on doing something that slowly. I would like to get into commercial appraising as well, and i figure a college degree wouldn't help. I think i'm going to go the clep route, and then i'm going to transfer them to a university.

Not even gonna go there.

Whew! That's good to hear.
