Hello! Has anyone ever taken the Residential Appraisal Report Writing class from the Appraisal Institute? If so, tell me a little about it...I am very curious! It has two parts. Unfortunately they aren't offering the first part anytime soon in Southern California, but I'd still like to know how it is.

Thanks!

I haven't had the AI class, but if you're on the new side of things, Ann O'Rourke's Appraisal Today conference has a 2 day "Residential appraising using the URAR Form" that is awesome, I took it last January, and I'd been appraising for almost 3 years, and I still learned a lot.

I took a Residential Report Writing class from McKissock with Tracy Martin, she was awesome as well, although a little scary - she shows up with her USPAP book and Fannie Mae Guidelines book (yes, she had them bound) and they're all tabbed and she knows where everything she needs is in each book. She jokes a lot with the peanut gallery, makes it very entertaining but you learn a lot!

I took Course 500, which is an Advanced Writing Course. For me, it was not that useful, mainly because I write narratives all the time and was a copy editor for a few years. Whether or not it is useful simply depends on the level of your writing and English skills.

Wow, thanks guys! That was pretty helpful : ) Any more ideas/info will be appreciated!!

The AI has the course (which I think David referenced) and they have (or had) a 2-day seminar.
I took the 2-day seminar and found it very helpful. But, I was a "D" student in english, so for me it worked!

I have some collegues that have taken Appraisal Institute classes and they said it's not worth the money.

I approach appraisal writing using the structure of a debate/argument. The appraisal is your position/opinion. Back it up with facts and findings. Remember to structure your adments and comments that way, and you will be fine.

Also, I recommend creating your own admentments and saving them in a master document outside of your appraisal files. That way you have consistent and customizable verbage that works in specific situations.

When writing the first few narratives, I recommend going through Standards 1 and 2 to make sure all bases are covered.

I don't know anything about AI's new courses that are for the demo alternatives. I'd like to know how they differ from course 500.
