The old fashion hand split white oak shingle in this part used to last on barns and the like for 20 plus years. These appear to be too light to be oak. BTW, I still have a froe around here somewhere. Our first old chicken houses had shakes...believe it or not. This is not a great pix but you can see 'em... pix about 1950. Tarpaper sides, later covered in rolled asphalt
