In case anyone didn't get the memo.... There's a petition on Change.org for proposed steps re: the Appraisal Institute, including, but not limited to, a vote of no-confidence against the current Board of Directors, a full outside accounting audit to determine where missing (possibly embezzled) funds went, accountability for those responsible and a tightening of financial lines to ensure lack of waste, as well as addressing the b.s. that happened against former CEO Cindy Chance.

Whether you are a member or not, I think we all can agree that corruption in any of the organizations that attempt to speak for appraisers should be rooted out. If you agree with this petition, whether you are a member of the Appraisal Institute or not, please consider signing it. There are a lot of GOOD people at the appraisal institute who want positive change. They are trying to take the first step with this petition. It's not an end all, be all solution. But it's a darn good first step. And personally, I think they deserve all our support.

If you don't agree, fine. Don't sign it. But if you do, please consider signing and sharing it with all the interested parties you know. The more signatures, the better.

I'm a non-member. I don't think non-members have any business signing such a petition or meddling with AI affairs. In my view, the AI is for AI members, not for everyone. It would be a tragedy if the org got coerced into doing something the members objected to by dint of a beauty contest that was swung by non-members.

Just my opinion. I don't often even comment on AI politics and such because what they do is none of my business.

That's a good point, George. But honestly, if people AREN'T members because they object to certain things this petition would fix.... maybe they should make their voices heard also. If they aren't and would never be interested in membership, even if the AI was fixed, truly non-profit, not bought by special interests, etc, and they still knew they would never, ever join... then maybe they shouldn't vote.

I'd put a like on the above if not for the reference to special interests; because that clause will invariably be isolated from the context and re-written as supporters agreeing with the allegation as stated. Which for all I know may/may not be the case - I have no way of forming the informed opinion on that.

Key to the reference to "special interests" was "bought by special interests." Special interests aren't necessarily bad if they are pro-survival. But typically when money is involved, things get corrupt. Maybe I'm an idealist, but I believe we should be able to have an organization advocate for appraisers nationwide, both General & Residential, with high ethics. After all, our jobs are to be unbiased and promote and maintain the public's trust in appraisals through our daily work. We can't do that if we're unethical. An organization that advocates for us can't advocate if they are bought.
