RECEIVED TODAY - RE USPAP
"As you know by now, February was a busy month at the Foundation.
Our special edition newsletter announced the Appraisal Standards Board's decision to extend the effective date of the 2020-2021 Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice until December 31, 2022. That generated many questions, and I wanted to take this month's newsletter to spend a bit more time on what this means for continuing education.
Many appraisers have reached out to ask about how this decision will impact the 7-Hour National USPAP Update course if there isn't a new USPAP published this year. This is a great question, and the short answer is that it doesn’t.
The two year continuing education requirement mirrors requirements in other professions. It is based on the belief that it is important for appraisers to understand their professional standards, and regularly reaffirm how to perform ethically, independently, and free of bias. As a result, these continuing education requirements are not tied to the cadence of updates to USPAP.
The education requirements for appraisers are set forth by the Appraiser Qualifications Board. The AQB requires appraisers to take the 7-Hour National USPAP Update course, or its equivalent, every two years. If you took the class in 2020, you will need to take the new 7-Hour National USPAP Update course in 2022.
Many have also asked what will be in this new course if there are no USPAP updates to cover. To that, I say, stay tuned. Our Vice President of Appraisal Issues is working on an innovative rewrite of this course to focus more on real world applications of USPAP and skills you can take directly into your professional standards-based appraisal practice.
We look forward to making more announcements about the new 7-Hour National USPAP Update course soon. If you have more questions about the latest USPAP decision and how it impacts you, please respond to this email, and we'll get back with you soon.
Sincerely,
Dave Bunton
President"
