All of a sudden my computer will not recognize the cd and dvd drives (D & E). I checked the cables and pushed everything to make certain the cards and wires are connected properly but no luck. Why would both suddenly go out? Anyone know?

Have you added any new programs, spyware, anti virus or security suites?
I installed Norton security and it slowed down and made my computer act very inconsistent. I had to uninstall and use another for security purposes.

Also certain CD/DVD burning softwares will cause the drives to disappear temporarily. Roxio is the worst for this that I know of and actually have a downloadable patch called "Driveup" that corrects it. You might Google some of the symptoms you are having and see what is available from others who have been there.

Good luck!!

Your CD ROM could be bad! Those are $50 to $120. I would try that after looking at software conflicts.

Your motherboard could also be the culprit. In which case it could either be that your BIOS has taken a dump or perhaps the IDE port you're using went bad. I assume you have both drive chained up on the same cable...

Are the drives still giving you grief?

Thank you all for your advice. I have a Dell and they have an on-line chat room for problems. I addressed it there, someone within a few minutes talked about "upper and lower filters", going to msconfig and removing them (I know the dangers of msconfig), did it and all is well. (note: you are right, this was a Roxio problem as well in the past).
