Why would an Appraiser even hire a Trainee?

I would not want to take on a residential trainee because anyone who would want to become a residential appraiser needs to have their head examined. I have enough crazy people in my life already. So they are either crazy or they think appraising is simply filling out a grid. The income potential seemingly does not justify the cost.

When I worked for a larger shop, most new trainees were shocked about how involved the adjustment development process is and how ambiguous the data can be. It hurt some of their brains. They were only exposed to text-book scenarios where the data works nicely. So many were turned off by having to contact agents/brokers during the process. Many thought you would just fill in a grid and be done. This was right after the Money Magazine article that named appraiser as the best job.

I saw many, I mean MANY, trainees start out motivated and by the end of the first year, year and a half, just wither away into indifference. It's not an easy path. In my time there I saw only 1, no kidding just 1, out of approximately 7 from what I recall, person make it all the way through and get the cert. I worked exponentially harder in terms of actual work and time than my MBA. The MBA was a joke compared to earning my residential cert. This is why I have no idea why one would do it other then wanting to work from home in turn for less money. And these days working from home is not an anomaly.

I am planning on bringing on one or two analysts in the second half of the year.
