my new message on an older Win 7 machine is "This copy of Windows is not genuine" It references Windows Build 7601. Message started after i ran an update of two optional updates.

i did find some info on the internet about uninstalling the updates so i did that and it did not help. Everything still seems to be working ok on that machine but the message keeps popping up and includes a 'click here' to fix this box. I have run a malewarebytes scan and it doesn't find any problems. And i have some free antivirus program my tech expert recommended. Any one have any experience with this? I hate to click any box that might make everything even worse....

If the copy wasn't Genuine, how did it get on your machine ?? ( I never "click here" to Fix anything ) to me it generally means somebody has tapped your machine via email or other event.. Perhaps try to shut down the computer and then re-boot the modem, see what happens.

Good Luck

PS: you can also try contacting your Service provider (AT&T / Comcast ) whomever and see if they have any input; do #1 above 1st

I think microsoft has a way to authenticating if windows is genuine or a bootleg version...(or a good computer tech could do it ) I bought a computer, years ago, that had a bootleg version of windows installed and ran into the same message, my tech guy could have solved it by installing genuine windows (which was an expensive upgrade), I just decided to buy a new computer instead. I can't say if your problem is the same but it is possible. r

Someone has hijacked your registry key not the software. Was one of the updates #1033? That's the W.A.T. update which checks for authenticity. Try uninstalling that and restart computer.

which version of Windows? OEM or Retail key? Just call Microsoft, and they’ll give you a new key. If you’re on Win10 play hardball and demand Win10Pro for the aggravation. Id guess you had an OEM key and AutoKMS was somehow blocked, perhaps by your Firewall or AV.
