I bought a computer last summer that came with Windows ME. It keeps freezing up. Does anyone know if I can buy XP and load it on and solve the freezing problem? I already added more RAM and that didn't help. I keep thinking it must be Win ME because my XP computer has a very similar setup and almost never freezes up.

Thanks!

You'll probably be glad you switched from Windows ME, but just in case...

How about buying another hard disk and doing a fresh installation of XP onto the new disk? If anything goes wrong (missing drivers, program incompatibility, etc.) you can just plug your old hard disk back in, with nothing lost.

Here's a reasonable hard drive for $65 with free shipping:

I think that Windows XP comes with a money-back guarantee, so you should be able to pull this off without risking much money, and more importantly, without risking your data.

But, keep in mind that you can get a new XP computer for $500-$600. If the upgrade (with new hard disk) costs $170, then you're only $330 away from the price of a new computer. If you can do an appraisal in the same time it takes to do the XP upgrade, it's pretty close to six of one, a half-dozen of another.

Kurt: My first instinct was to just go buy a new computer, but I thought maybe I was being the computer geek I really am (I LOVE new stuff)!! You're not helping me by encouraging me to go buy that new computer.

So that is what that kid is saying......

I converted from ME to XP and simply had a tech take the hard drive to zero then install XP new. It is not perfect but eliminated 99% of that lock up business (i had the same problem you refer to)...I have been told the XP overwriting version will work just fine except you often have to update the print drivers for Adobe, your printer, and Paperport or similar scanner and/or camera software. Just starting over and loading those programs is about as easy. I used a tech and cost me $50 plus the software.
