I seem to get a prompt to add a new Windows update on a daily basis now. Frankly, I am getting sick of being annoyed by these prompts. Does anyone else have this problem? If it keeps up, I am going to find out how to turn this update thing off. How annoying.

Doug --

I haven't had any problems letting Microsoft update my windows system anytime that they've offered an update or a new patch. I go to their website and let the system automatically choose the updates and dlownload them for me.

Are you concerned that updating might not work with your system?

My only major problem in the past year was the Adobe 5.00. Microsoft is the one that put out the 5.05 patch for that after I'd spent $400 in gurus on-site and on-line unloading and reloading my system.

Doug,

I assume you are using Windows XP? I prefer to review the updates before I install them so I have disabled automatic updates. From time to time I click the Windows Update icon and go to the MS site and see what is available. I install all the critical updates but don't install most of the others because they don't apply to me. For example the other day one of the updates was just applicable for the Sony Viao computer, which I don't have. So I didn't get that one along with a lot of the others that don't apply. No use to clutter up the hard drive, also you never know when one of these unneeded updates might screw up something else.

To disable automatic updating in Windows XP do this:

1. Click the start button, then run, then put in services.msc

2. The Automatic Updates is near the top. Right click it and select properties, then you will see you have a choice of automatic, manual, and disable. Choose "disable".

Then from time to time click the "Windows Update" icon which is located on the Start menu when you click "all programs".

I am also moving this topic to the Tech forum because I think it will have more interest there.

Hope this helps!

Try right clickon on the update icon it should open and the third choice is Manual update. That should keep it from poping up.
