Would I be welcome in MO?

My daughter is talking about relocating to Missouri (her fiance has family there). I'm tired of California and would like to try something different.

Missouri is a mystery to me except for the nostalgaic images from old Judy Garland movies. Is it like that anywhere? Could a California appraiser find an inexpensive home in an old neighborhood of tree lined streets and picket fences and make a successful business?

I grew up in SE Missouri and still venture back to visit with family once or twice a year. Real estate values are low (comparaed to CA) but remember-Missouri is a non-disclosure state. That could be a PITA when it comes to appraising.

Missouri is a non disclosure state so learning the ropes might be tough. St Louis County is a disclosure county...I think there are a few more. Some counties have no electronic records. Do your research from the file cabinet.

You could live like a king in most of Missouri. Some very affordable areas. I liked Missouri (Kansas City area), moved north to Iowa 20 years ago.

Hey Greg! Let me be the first on this thread to welcome you to the "Show Me State!" Missouri would love to have someone with your expertise doing biz here.

I don't have the crystall ball this weekend but honestly feel that there will be a nice percentage of people looking at retirment or change of environment from the left and right coast with the cost of living. Real estate in the midwest is relatively stable (especially in rural areas), with minimal ups and downs, due to the conservative approach of local lenders and homeowners.

I don't think you would have any trouble getting acclimated to the market Greg. I trained here locally, went out on my own, wanted to keep seeing homes even if I wasn't appraising them....a local broker let me go with her agents every week to all of their open houses and still extends the inviation today. Business is done differently here!

Seattle & Portland has been home for numerous years and I dearly miss the Pacific Northwest but have truly enjoyed getting back to my home state (MO). If you need your urban fix you can always get to St. Louis or Kansas City.

My daughter's future extended family lives in the St. Peters area. She was there a couple of months ago and said it was very nice.

Mr. Beavers - I'd have to do the appraisal myself because I think I'm the only appraiser on appraisal world that can do this one.
