Jo Ann - Do you have CD's in your computer when this happens? Sounds like something I have seen. The computer is waiting on the CD Reader(s) to spin up and read the disk. Take the CD's out and see if it still does it. I bet it will quit.

Catrina - If you don't find a problem with the computer and you have been using the computer for a couple of years. The best thing to do is to just reformat and start over. I have been giving serious consideration to reformatting mine once a year. It runs soo much better after a reformat. Yea, it's a pain in the rear but if you do good backups it's worth the trouble.

Reset the CD's? I was a pc tech for several years, A+ Certified, etc. I have never heard of resetting the cd's. I would get everything uninstalled off the computer that you dont use, defrag the hard drive. Check your start up folder to make sure you dont have unneccesary programs running in the background. You can look down in the system tray (bottom right) and make sure you dont have a dozen programs running at the same time. This always eats up a bunch of resources and slows down your computer. If all else fails I would do a good backup and reformat the hard drive and then reinstall xp.

I have temporally solved my problem. The two trays that hold the two data CDs that have to be accessed very frequently have been pulled out, when ever I need them I will push back it and then pull out again. My computer now works beautifully and I can listen to music without it fading out and dying and playing again. So my question would be--does it hurt anything to have those two trays just sticking out? The computer and the trays are in a location where they will not get bumped. There are a lot of programs in my tool bar along the bottom of the screen. With my old Windows 98SE computer I would go to msconfig and un-check everything, that sure help it to operate much smoother and quicker. But this new tech that built my new computer says I shouldn't have done that. Does un-checking items in msconfig in XP work the same same way as Windows 98SE?

I don't see any problem with the CD drawer open other than the obvious. Getting damaged.

As for the other. Simple suggestion. If it ain't broke, Dont fix it!

Sure you could uncheck somethings but you might just uncheck something and not be able to reboot you computer. So just if it's working leave it alone.
