For the four Pre-Requisite Advanced exams to "Become a Candidate for Designation"

Advanced Income Capitalization
Advanced Market Analysis and HBU
Advanced Concepts and Case Studies
Quantitate Analysis

Did you all take the courses and then pass the exams? It does not look like any online synchronous courses are offered in the near future, so each of these are one week in-person courses.

Or did you challenge the exams with use of other study materials? If so, can you recommend study materials? Particularly for Advanced Market Analysis and HBU, as well as Advanced Concepts and Case Studies.

Thanks for any help!

Challenge success likely depends on whether you are wearing Smarty Pants.

I would call or email Gary DeWeese and pose the question. appraisalinstitute.org

I took all of the courses and passed the exams, but that was in 2010 - 2013 and there have been some changes to the required courses since that time. Personally, I found the exams difficult, even after studying every night, so being able to challenge the exams without taking the courses would be quite a task. It is a pain to take off for long periods for the classes, but that is why many appraisers go straight to pursuing their MAI after their CG licensing.

At one time, you could purchase the course materials for self study prior to challenging the tests. AI materials are typically self-contained and include the content that module tests and the comprehensive exam gauge understanding of.

Thanks for your replies.

Red Flint, thanks for mentioning Gary DeWeese - I'm seeing his name mentioned often in regards to study materials he has developed for the comprehensive exam. Unfortunately, I have never owned a pair of Smarty Pants.

Gobears81, I just passed the CG exam on 1/2, so I am hoping to roll right through into the MAI coursework/testing. I have been reading similar sentiments - that these advanced course exams were pretty challenging, so I was hoping to find some study material (while avoiding having to travel to a class for a week).

TerryRohrer, I'm VERY glad you mentioned this. I never considered that by challenging the exam, they would provide a complimentary set of course materials. I am seeing through the challenge exam registration that this is definitely the case. I'm going to challenge the exam for the class I'm most confident with (Income Approach) and see if I can get by with this "complimentary set of course materials."
