NAR - Appraisal Institute

Interesting responses and comments.

For reference, there are about 1000 NAR Appraisal Designees, the total for RAA and GAA. Although I hold the RAA Designation, it's clear to me it does not compare with the SRA. The NAR group did not expect the AI to award a reciprocal designation for the NAR Designation and did not seek that as part of any agreement to re-affiliate. Designations were discussed, and will be part of the plan, if agreed to.

The Appraisal Institute would affiliate with the NAR as an NAR Affiliate. It would continue to be a separate entity, as are all other NAR Affiliates (CCIM, RLI, SIOR, etc.). It would maintain their own staff, officers and governance structure, not be absorbed by NAR.

As to the value of REALTOR membership, two things come to mind:
  • It's amazing how many members are unaware of and fail to take advantage of all NAR has available.
  • The services and benefits and services I use every year far outweigh what I pay in dues.
Failure to utilize the association on your part does not make the association a failure.
Frank,
I like to get more information about NAR appraisal branch. I have broker license and was NAR member 18 years ago as a broker but at that time they didn't have NAR appraisers. I still have my broker license but haven't been active for 16 years. What do they offer to appraisers and at what price? I know what do they do for realtors.

It wouldn't be absorbed by NAR, but plenty of its cash would be. It's not going to be any of my cash.

John,

You know this for a fact? Pleny of AI cash is to be absorbed by NAR? Just how familiar are you with the relationships between NAR and the Institutes, Societies and Councils?

One of my biggest regrets as a professional was that I didn't earn my MAI in time to vote against the AIREA/NAR split. I thought the split was a mistake then and still think so now.

I'm all for the re-affiliation.

Lobbying by Realtors frequently conflicts with appraisers issues.

Terr,

This is a common perception, but easily debunked with resect to national issues. Members of the Appraisal Institute leadership were of the same belief. They, however, took a quick look at the NAR policy statements (posted on the realtor.org website) and found much common ground and no blatant conflicts.

Now, if we are talking about state associations, that can clearly be another story. Re-Affiliation may provide a means for local and state Appraisal Institute Chapters to get a voice in State Association policy decisions. REALTOR-Appraisers have already made inroads in plenty of state associations, and have convinced many to support many appraiser issues. It has worked in Florida.

I can only say how it has worked in Arkansas. Thanks to the state Realtors, A real estate agent is now exempt from appraising regulations in the appraisal of an estate. In other words, in an area where an accurate appraisal is most necessary, a BPO or CMA can be used to set the value of an estate to determine value for taxation, IRS, or inheritance in court. In fact, a Realtor can even call it an "Appraisal" and he is determining "Market Value". We have a more recent law which prohibits a BPO from being called an appraisal or the value "market value" but it exempts that previous legislation by applying the new law only to Fed. Related Transactions. That's the kind of NAR I know.

Does anyone else but me not see a slight conflict of interest here? This is like a crime syndicate uniting with the FBI. With the FBI the being the low man in the pecking order.
I was affiliated with the AIREA when they split. The issue was that the NAR basically told the institute to sit down and shut up. The AI is a professional organization promoting professionalism and the NAR is a trade union. I can't believe some of you guys would fall for that ruse. All the NAR wants is low standards so that anyone that can stand on their hind legs and pay dues can get certified.

Sounds like ZAIO searching for a review of USPAP compliance via review by a former board member and then spinning it to look like an endorsement.:new_smile-l:

Frank:

Thank you for posting this. I believe this very positive news. One of the worst mistakes the Institute ever made was pulling out of NAR. I am glad there is talk of reforming this relationship. I applauded you for your efforts and so do a lot of others. It was always a good fit.
