As with everyone, I need to accumulate CE for my various state appraisal licenses as well as my state sales license. I have taken McKissock online courses and seminars before, and have been generally satisfied. I like to take courses that earn me credit hours for both my appraisal and sales licenses (two birds with one stone, so to speak).

I looked at McKissock's classes that are approved for appraisal CE and broker CE, and notice that the same courses that are approved for both cost different amounts depending on whether you get to the courses by requesting "real estate continuing education" or "appraisal continuing education". For example, the 7-hour "income capitalization" course costs $109 if you navigate to it as an appraisal CE class, but only $69 if you get to it as a real estate CE class.

I have two questions:

1. Why the different costs for the same course?

2. If I take it under the real estate CE, is there any reason I couldn't use the hours for my appraisal licenses?

I would appreciate any thoughts you all have on this. I see no reason to pay significantly more for the same course if I don't have to.

There are a few places that allow you to "double dip" your CE hours. The local AI branch in Pittsburgh usually has at least one 7 hour class that the state board accepts for both brokers and appraisers. The local Realtors currently have a 3.5 hour class that works for both.

I don't know of any classes that McKissock offers that gives credit for both. It's a matter of clearing it with the state board.

I use all of my Broker renewal CE for appraisal CE in Virginia. Virginia is the only state I know of that does not pre-approve any course by anyone for appraisal CE. As long as the course is at least 2 hours and covers appraisal related issues, it will be accepted. I just received 2 hours of CE for attending the last meeting of the Virginia Real Estate Appraisal Board.

Most states charge the CE provider per person per course, so obvioulsy in the case you mentioned, the state charges less per Realtor course versus the same course for appraisal credit. Makes sense that Realtor courses would be less, due to the number of Relators in comparison with Appraisers in a given state. So, as usual, its likely the govt effect.

You need to check with McKissock on #2.

Don: The ASC has told us here that attendance at a Council on Real Estate Appraisers monthly meeting can not be used for continuing education credit as an appaiser! Changed about a year or so ago! No credit given!

They have a big new building to pay for.:) If I remember correctly, they wanted more per student and also wanted to raise annual license fees substantially, but it didn't pass.

Mr. Adams,

Why are you asking all the wrong people?

Call your state appraisal and real estate boards.

Webbed.
