Get 2 Dogs

http://www.yourfamilyshealth.com/cardiology/high_blood_pressure/

Learn to control stress; get plenty of exercise at least three times a week; cut down on your salt intake; watch your weight and get rid of those extra pounds sensibly; and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables to get lots of vitamin C and minerals like potassium and calcium.

Some researchers suggest getting a dog, because having a pet is a calming influence. Strangely enough, study after study shows that petting or talking to your pet brings blood pressure down and keeps it down as long as the contact with the pet is maintained.

Recent studies have shown eating tomatoes to be especially beneficial to men, who face a slightly higher risk of high blood pressure than women. Tomatoes are high in vitamin C which can help lower blood pressure and the lycopenes in tomatoes have been found to lower the risk of prostate cancer in men who eat tomatoes several times each week. That also goes for pizza, spaghetti sauce and even catsup! But be careful not to load them down with extra salt — which would negate all their other benefits, and learn to read the labels on the foods you eat.

And, finally, lighten up a little. Get in a good laugh several times a day

(on a serious note - Get to a Nutritionist and have your blood tested for overload or deficiencies of essential minerals etc.) Dietary changes can produce AMAZING results. We Are What We Eat.

Sometimes there is no clearly identifiable reason for the HBP. What are the side effects that cause you to stop taking your medication. There are many many different types of BP meds and they act differently and can cause different side effects in different people.

You may need to try a few different kinds before you find the one that is right for you. One that brings your BP down and causes the least number of unpleasant side effects.

Watching your diet, salt intake and regular exercise, losing weight etc. can lower BP but not in everyone and not always to an ideal level.
Any medicine you take in is chemical. Any chemical has adverse side effect on your system in the long run. Even aspirin has adverse side effect. I don't mind to take medication if I am in emergency or surgery but I don't want to be on medication for the rest of my life. I think high BP is a symptom not a disease. The disease is something else that causes High BP but doctors don't want to cure the cause, they want to alleviate the symptom and I don't like it
I am watching my diet very carefully. No salt, no sugar, no fat. My height is 5.9, my weight is 162-164, my waist size is 34 and my cholesterol and heart beat (pulse) are very low.
I think if I want to go for pills, I may go for water pills. I think water pill is the least harmful med for High BP

I am 59 years old and have high blood pressure my entire adult life. heritary. Take 3 medications daily to controll it plus a staten drug. Had a triple by pass 6 years ago. I don't check my blood pressure that often.

And yes the omron is a good machine. I bring with me to the doctor to make sure it stays calibrated.

Try seeking out a MD with a degree in naturopathy (ND). They tend to not be run-of-the-mill prescription writers.

Genetics is important too, sometimes diet and exercise are not enough. If you can't relax, type A personality, that sort of thing, give accupuncture a try, for real.

There are some good supplements to try, be careful of all the hype as there are many skippy supplement manufactures out there. Here are some that are legit...

I should check my bp. It's always been pretty low :new_all_coholic:

Water pills, usually hydrochlorothiazide, are one way to go but they also cause you to excrete a lot of potassium so make sure you eat a banana or drink OJ every day.

BTW a baby aspirin every day would probably make a lot of sense for you too. Ask your cardiologist

I just checked my pulse and it was 68 just sitting here at my desk. My blood pressure is typically around 95/64.

Moh, I think you need to get your heart going!!!

I just checked online and the American Heart Assn says the average is 60 to 80 beats per minute.

EM,
Your pulse is higher than mine but your BP is pretty good. gosh, I wish I could get that low BP without medicating myself. The lowest I ever got was 99/76 but then I was taking two medications. I am sure I can get that low if I start taking medication again. My pulse right now is 47, earlier it was 41 but the max is 50. I don't know if it is good or bad to have low pulse and I don't know if Pulse and BP are related. Shouldn't low pulse be an indicative of healthy heart and if the heart is healthy why my BP is high? This is driving me crazy.

Moh,

If your pulse is that low without serious physical conditioning, it probably is artificially low due to your meds. They need to be adjusted as they are not working properly for you.

As for the worrying, how did I know that from many investment postings long ago. :rof:

Seriously, worrying is fear based and I would suggest a martial arts training program along with some meditation perhaps. Worrying is a HUGE waste of time and energy spent on things that seldom come to pass. My wife does the worrying for both of us.

Good luck and good health!
