Opinion: Does it pay to have an MAI?

Caligirl,
Are you in the SF Bay Area? I've heard the MAI opens a lot more doors in that market.

Not 'legally' required. But, at least in my market, this is true. ;)

Admittedly it's harder to open the door without a designation, but certainly possible. Goes to show that the designation does open doors that might otherwise not yield to an appraiser.

To believe that having the MAI designation does not allow for more opportunities vs. not having the designation is delusional thinking.

I'm sure there will be some that disagree or complain that this is the case, followed by tales of terrible reports prepared by MAIs--as inevitable as the sun rising in the east. Such is life!

"I once saw an MAI report that was just............"

I have to agree, what ever ones position is, for better or for worse, having a designation and in particular having the MAI designation is a benefit more times than it is a possible detriment.

Yes, although this particular market is somewhat 'saturated' with designations. :)

There are many outstanding non-designated posters here, PE and PP spring to mind, also Howard Klahr and Mr. Murphy, and George Hatch. I am sure that they have their share of gov't clients, and I did not mean to belittle their knowledge or accomplishment with my previous post.

Thank you NevCG! I felt pretty good, now just waiting for that email......:)

Good luck. The good email gets out in a week or so, while the bad email takes a month. I finally passed the dreaded income module III, when I figured out alot of the data presented in questions is irrelevent to the problem, and simply messed me up.
