Have you- or someone you know left the Real Estate Appraisal Profession for another career?

If so, what career did they move into?

What was the reason for leaving appraisal?

Something more honorable like chicken litter decaking business or piano player in a brothel...and then I'll take my money and invest it in something safe...like a race horse syndicate

I think this response is an example of why Appraisers are not taken seriously as a profession.

I know someone who left appraising and went into property management. They were a former World Savings appraiser and when the company split up, they found it hard going as an independent. A CAM license takes only a week to get and there is plenty of demand. I think Terrel was just lightening the mood!

No, my response was not over-reacting, it was an observation, and I have found that over the years, unfortunately Appraisers don't act as professional as others in analytical/finance professions, so the result is that they are not taken seriously by other professionals.

that and over-the-top overreacting!

Why do you care, are you making a movie? :D I see by your previous posts that you are interested in appraisal methodology. Are you considering the profession, thinking about running into a burning building while people are running out?

After 15 years I decided to leave. Why? Ruinous competition due to a doubling of the workforce, more effort and responsibility for less pay, lack of respect from both clients and the general public. When the relationship is over, you know it. Time to, in Paul Simon's words, slip out the back Jack and get yourself free.

I am going into something that is part time, much more lucrative and unlikely to be messed with by the government. I wouldn't dream of letting the appraisal herd know...for fear many of the same opportunists would follow and just ruin another good industry.

Nope, have no plans to go anywhere else, I've worked hard for over 20 years in this business. While some cut backs were necessary, as everyone has had to do, I'm busy enough to maintain our life style until things change in DC. No, I don't do residential work on the URAR, will only do ERC and non-conforming residential for clients such as attorneys, CPA's, etc. Also diversified into brokerage, rentals, tax appeals, investing and renovations, etc. Appraising is but one slice of our whole business pie.

My father, (now deceased), told me, years ago, when I was training to be an appraiser, "never go into a field where the gov't can regulate you." Too bad I did not listen to my wise parent...

Govt now wants to regulate everything, so that's not an answer or solution anymore.

I'm out on disability now, wife is looking for another answer than appraising.
