FHA coal in basement

So there is no vapor hazards or that sort of thing with coal?

It is I guess in it's raw state where it's less volatile than after refinement.

FHA does have a rule for leftover junk and construction supplies, etc.

Don't think that's applicable for personal use fuels though.

Otherwise, looks like a non issue. Organized, reasonably contained, etc.

Don't photo, just state.

If you put a photo in there, you've got to immediately turn around and say you're not a coal expert, and assumed acceptable.

It's not vapor, generally, it's dust.

Coal dust causes, black lung disease.

But, I guess you'd have to be sitting in it and playing with it for hours every day.

Otherwise, lots of people work with and around coal all the time.

.

from i could find online the hazard is from coal ash or storage of large amounts

Anything mashed into a fine powder and inhaled in a large amount will cause lung problems, including baby oil. I think coal is probably better to have around your grandchildren than baby oil. That is of course provided that your grandchildren are not mining coal in the basement. Think of coal as really, really, compact wood and if you add enough pressure it will turn into a diamond. It doesn't off gas and is not considered a building material, it is a form of heating fuel. If there were a fire, it would burn longer in that area.

I grew up in coal country in WV and I can tell you that a little exposure to coal dust will not cause black lung. Years of exposure in the coal mines with poor ventilation causes black lung. A pile of coal in a basement won't. Now, if you sit and play in that pile of coal for a few years with no ventilation, then you might have a case.

Make them tear the house down immediately.

Possible sale to the neighborhood Scrooges for Christmas stocking use.
