I am sorry to hear about your friend.

If you take this job as a non-appraiser it is a valuation service. USPAP obligation is to no mislead.
If you take this job because you are an appraiser it is Appraisal Practice. There are USPAP obligations.

General liability and E & O... My insurance underwriter used a 10' selfie stick and smart phone to "inspect" my roof. He did not use a ladder.

I did their online training / see if you qualify thing.
The biggest focus seems to be on the roof. Looking for hail damage, wind damage, etc, for insurance.
Checking out roof vents, turbines, pipe jacks, etc. WTF is a pipe jack? Marking a 10' x 10' area and marking the hail hits or other damage with chalk and photographing.
You will be walking all over that roof for photos and video, assuming it is not too steep.

I am not doing that unless it is a flat or nearly flat roof. Anything else is too steep for my comfort.
So, I am not likely doing it. Never mind it does not hail here, and we don't get tornadoes. Usually.

Sounds like insurance adjuster work. There are independent, third party insurance adjusters (much like our business in that regard), so I’m curious why this company is seeking out appraisers for this stuff.

wow that's crazy- sounds like they should be hiring roof inspectors. If someone is good at/feels confident walking around on roofs, the work itself sounds repetitive looking for the same things...not for me either I get nervous on top steps of ladder

In my role as a Home Inspector I ALWAYS refer any roofing issues to a licensed roofing professional since I am not one and am a "generalist". Don't be a dumb arse and exceed your expertise and license level...

This is mainly taking photos and the adjuster is remote, looking at your photos.
