I suppose this could have been posted in the appraisal education forum, but has anyone here taken classes with the ASA or joined their organization? They have a going-concern appraisal class for RE appraisers that might be a good one to take.

I've been looking at other educational providers lately - IRWA has a lot to like, both as an organization and their educational offerings - but they only have a few appraisal courses that I haven't taken yet, other than the basic appraisal principles classes.

ASA IS LIKE AI- Their courses are no better or no worse then who the particular Instructor is . I do not belong to either anymore but have taken courses from both over the years. It's been Mixed results. The problem is both organizations members will tell you their education is the best. My experience is neither is well geared for residential loan production appraisers but Good for Non-Lender and Commercial Assignments.

ASA incorporated the old NAIFA. I've not taken a stand alone ASA course but a couple that were multi-society offerings.
The best classes I've taken are agri - ASFMRA. I've taken several of those.

I'm president of the ASA/IFA Middle Tennessee Chapter, and we have many courses out and coming. We also have some very good instructors.

Molly Orman has been working hard on the ASA education side, which was a positive move corporately. Molly and her husband, Mike, have been instructors and appraisers for decades with the NAIFA and have brought a great energy of excellence to the ASA.

I'm biased, of course.

In my past NAIFA, ASA and IRWA offered excellent live classes for commercial and residential appraisers. Their designations were excellent when bidding on public contracts. In my experience the cost for a NAIFA or ASA class was less than an IRWA class. The tests for an IRWA class (partial interests for example) were tougher than most other professional organizations. NAIFA & ASA were more residential than IRWA which was more commercial. Online classes were not a major way to get CE education in my time.

I should note ASA appraisers have excellent appraisal courses for M & E (machinery and equipment). If you are a commercial appraisers and do public bids an ME appraiser comes into play more than one expects. For example, a city wants to put in a Costco store and needs an appraisal. M & E appraisers can help on the displacement of stores/businesses for this separate assignment. Any value outcome impacts the real property appraiser. Typically, the winner of a bid takes on both assignments. Another example, an appraiser wins a bid to do a rent survey for an airport terminal. Many cities do this every 3-5 yrs. Most times the same winning appraiser has to do rent surveys for the airbridge. This is the covered tunnel from the terminal to the airplane. Airlines rent the space. ASA appraisers are your best friend to work with you.

I would recommend taking the going-concern class from ASA. Good organization. Good topic. Good change from typical classes offered in the appraisal profession if you are a commercial appraiser.
