Are Staff Appraisers paid customary and reasonable fees?

They were advertising for a review position with specific terms, but I was the one who made the initial offer?
Stop the cap. You approached them and asked them to employ you. They didn't seek you out. When you left they didn't come chasing after you, begging and pleading for you to come back.

Same as occurs in most other occupations.

Actually I took the job because I was burned-out from being a micro-managed independent fee appraiser. it was a massive pay cut. I was making nearly $100k when I quit appraising for the company that trained me. Went down to $50k to escape the hell I was working in.
I wonder if you're sufficiently self-aware to realize that you're just validating my overarching point? You had alternatives but you chose to make that particular compromise based on your perception that it was a better deal for you.

They literally did seek me out directly through email. :ROFLMAO:

I still have the message. Everything is saved going back to 2004. Reading old emails is a trip. Gets you nostalgic.

Out here a consumer saves as much as $600 by getting a waiver and in some places even more . Now that's not good for appraisers but Lenders and GSE'S dont care, their goal is to streamline and lower costs .
Let's see how many buyers with a FICA score of say <=650 and $0 money down get a waiver. :mad2: NONE!

C'mon now, who are you trying to kid? Nobody values a junior licensee (or any licensee) enough to single them out for a job like that. You got the same email 10,000 other licensees got.

The fact remains that regardless of how you became aware of the job opening, you submitted an application to work for them, they screened that application and they went through their due diligence efforts before extending the job offer to you. The MOST you could say about their employment process is that the interaction was mutual.

None of which is a criticism in any way. Like I said, every one of us has done the same at one point or another. Matter of fact, the whole process of actively marketing ourselves as fee appraisers consists of US approaching out would-be clients. We don't have 1 boss. We have multiple bosses, and it could be argued that having more than 1 boss is a wholly desirable business strategy in our line of work.

I agree most of those will be FHA where the Underwriter does a manual Underwrite and an apprasial is required in your area FHA may be a big volume, but in my Counties most got priced out well over a year ago and now rates made it worse. Out here FHA and VA has dried up faster than conventional.

The bank was starting an inhouse AMC. I was part of a new 4 person team that reviewed all residential appraisals for the bank. Before us, appraisals were just reviewed by the underwriters and loan processors.

So they gave a Novice a chance to learn and get paid at the same time.
