In this age of transparency, we like to know why they changed it. It wasn't necessary. They didn't even let me know.

Would stating I am the writer of the report sound better? That was my intent. We know that the client 'owns' the report, but they are hiring/engaging me to write it.

The problem with "collecting a group of words" is
A) It is a swiftly changing and ever increasing list
B) It is different for every client--I use several words on the list provided in this thread, and only ever had one request to change--church--which I did not change, with no further ramifications, and I continue to get orders from that client.
C) In many/most reports, a particular 'word' may never even come up (the only time church does for instance is if subject is next to one and it has to be addressed because of likely review comment anyway wanting to know marketability effects. Why decline an assignment on the very low probability a word may be an issue anyway?
D) We can all continue to roll over and let this industry do whatever it wants to us, or have some appraisers have some credibility to stand up for themselves and the industry, since obviously their is absolutely ZERO advocacy for us from anyone. We will HAVE to do it ourselves.

How long and ridiculous will the lists get before each of us will raise their hand and say no?

The continued erosion of fees and business isn't bad enough. No, the appraiser haters want to cause a ton of stress for every report we do now. We know their end goal--to completely get rid of us. Fine. Do you roll over, bend over, or stand your ground? Each of us has to decide that for ourselves of course.

But what good will it be for you to be the last fish in a lake that has completely dried up?
Life was simpler back then when you knew a man was a man and woman was a woman.
Welcome to the new world in which you have to be more awaken.

Even in music, lyrics have changed to be more sensitive to gender.
In Miley Cyrus new hit song Flower, the chorus goes like this:

"I can love me better than
I can love me better than you can"

It sounds better with my changed lyrics to:
"I can love me better than
I can love me better than any man"

DRE still exists.
I went into the site: dre.ca.gov

For appraisers, it's brea.ca.gov. I didn't know why they changed to BREA.

I absolutely agree that appraisers should stand firm on principles they don't believe their conscience(s) would allow them to defile. For me, being asked to use 'place of worship' instead of 'church' is not one of those principles. I cannot - and will not - speak for others.

That said, users' needs and desires DO continue to change - as they have since the inception of our profession. And the choice proffered to us is to adapt or go do something else - just as it has always been. I remember how angry the CHUMS folks were when FHA wen lender direct. It ruined their fiefdom. They were then left with the choice to adapt or do something else - just as we are now.

And as dumb as I think some of the requests are, I personally don't see an issue with accommodating the clients' requests not to use language that could be construed as indicating a bias.

BTW - you never did answer yesterday whether you'd draw a line in the sand over being asked not to use the word 'mosque'... and before you ask why it's so important, it's not. What it does, however, is identify potential bias in your own thought process - assuming you're not as defensive over the word 'mosque' as you are 'church'. However - I make no such assumption - hence the question.

And as to the part about collecting the words they don't want us to use and including them in the engagement letter - I thought that was brilliant. I'm not limber enough any more, though, to pat my own back...

I couldn't help myself.
I checked on you and your license will expire soon. Are you planning to renew? Have you taken your CE classes.
Your license number is not that low meaning you weren't one of the originals who got fathered in.
You were raised in Claremont and you still at Claremont. Most people move out of where they grew up.
You must love Claremont.

No they have also left the DRE web address up because so many people are like you and have no clue. Obviously you did not look at your license or go to the actual site As it says BRE -Both of my Last Renewals
are BRE- How can you be an appraiser but pay no attention to details ?

I just realize you are Certified Residential like me.
For some reason, I thought you were Certified General. Take that as a compliment.

I am a Commercial Broker since 1894 meaning I don't sell houses and never wanted to appraise commercial as It conflicted with my commercial listings and sales and we had two CGs that worked for us .
