The other professions created their own national associations whether trade or professional. Look at electricians or plumbers. Same way.

Government needs to step in and create it.

National Association of Real Property Appraisers.

NARPA

Let's go NAA.

National association of Appraisers.

Forumites are always shouting, protect....
PUBLIC TRUST, PUBLIC TRUST, PUBLIC TRUST....
But not us....
Can we agree that forumites aren't opposed to background checks....
Forumites are opposed to paying for them....
I know I'm opposed to paying for them....
But if push comes to shove and I want to work with a certain company that requires it....
I'll pay....

Your missing the point boy. Govt needs to be in charge just like every other profession or trade.

I'm not disagreeing or agreeing....

I just find it ironic that so many forumites are complaining that Government is the problem.... :)

Even most Tennessee Assessor's employees are called field appraisers but they have to take appraisal classes (even USPAP) to get the higher paid positions and they don't usually go inside homes as the county officials do not want that kind of liability. Not to mention county and state employees (in Tennessee) are background checked, finger printed, and drug tested as a requirement of the job. But, yeah just use anybody off the street that will work cheap. What did everyone expect with the 6 big AMCs being "partners"?
Do you think TN should revise its rules to ensure that all current licensed/certified appraisers have had background checks?

Regardless of what we started out with at the various states, the current criteria for appraiser applicants is to have a background check. In Calif we had background checks and fingerprints from the outset but they still issued licenses to people with misdemeanor convictions, and I'm aware of at least a couple cases with certain felonies. But the state at least knew who they were and their convictions didn't involve crimes against property (like theft, robbery, embezzlement, fraud, etc) or crimes of violence.

If you call a plumber or electrician or roofer or landscaper to come into your home do you have any way of assuming they have no criminal history for burglary or theft or s@x offenses or whatnot?
You can always vet those who enter your home.
