Just trying to clarify the situation. Assuming the friend/mentor is a honest and good appraiser, she would be the best choice.

Large firms practice the LIFO method of employment. Last in First Out. Helen appears to know this, as she mentioned it, and that shows her good judgement.
 
BTW, is sending out trainees without direct supervision, "your game"?
