A question about kids eating candy .

An active 4 year old with a rapidly growing brain will burn off a few cookies worth of sugar in a couple of hours.

And I don't think it's sugar that makes kids hyper when they eat sweets. It's the joy of the treat that makes them excited and happy.

Just don't give them too much because for the most part it IS empty calories and it takes the fun out of getting a treat.

In the old days getting a Coke or some Kool Aid was an once in a while treat that we savored. Now you can buy it in barrel size cups at the gas station or get endless refills at fast food places. Sugared drinks are what everyone should be watching out for. You can drink a weeks worth of calories in a few minutes.

One of my favorite treats as a child was my italian grandmother would make us ICED ESPRESSO, where you would make expresso the usual way and then add ice and water and sugar and fill a pitcher with it. It was like drinking rocket fuel (all the sugar and 10 times the caffeine). I can remember heart palpitations after a couple tall icy glasses of that stuff. There was only one thing I could do, RUN. I was like Forest Gump - I was runnin' and runnin........

I would take my kids out of that school, call the news media for endangerment of a child, and hire a high power attorney for present and future mental damages.

There is a thread about this very subject. It was posted 4 years ago. It used to be that it was a sweet jesture to give an apple to a teacher, but now they just want a Krispy Kreme donut. I always try dipomacy first, if that doesn't work, go over their head, like the principal or even all the way to the department of education if you need to. Teachers are supposed to be positive examples for our children, anything less is unacceptable.

If you had your child off of refined sugar and the school is feeding your child refined sugar and this is against your belief system you need to consider doing something about it.

When it comes to health it's almost impossible not to take drastic measures to safeguard yourself. I applaud anyone who takes the initative and does with their health what they beleive they should do especially regarding diet.

Beleive me, when you encounter health problems because of diet it don't reverse overnite.

The effects of processed food on our society is astounding and under reported. It is very difficult to stop eating refined sugar, dairy and grain products once you've been eating the stuff for 20,30,40,50 years.

I am printing a report in triplicate, and my printer is not "commercial" so I have some time to kill.

I am amazed at things I see sometimes, and this is one of them. Back when I was a kid we built ramps to jump over ditches built from scraps of lumber from garages. We lived. We played outside, no video games, built snowmen and ice ramps defying safety. We lived. Maybe we broke a bone but we lived life. We drank milk at all three meals.

Now I see these young parents who don't want Johnny to have cookies at school, or sue when Johnny falls off the playground equipment at the school. My HOA had a great playground for kids but took it down because of radical parents who would sue if Johnny fell and hurt himself.

These same parents buy Johnny every video game available so he sits on his butt instead of playing outside; they have video screens in the back of the minivan to keep him occupied instead of playing the "identify the license plates" game on family trips and they wonder why Johnny is fat.

There is nothing wrong with moderate sugar and empty calories. What is wrong is parents who won't let their kids live life, enjoy life and be kids. Before you blame sugar make sure you don't have the latest video games where your kids sit around for hours a day doing something that will never benefit them.

Buy them a bike, put a badminton net in your yard and restrict the video games to only when it is dark or raining. Ride the bike with your kid, play badminton with the kids and give them 10 tootsie rolls and some ice cream every day.

Some posts on here are pretty radical in my humble opinion.

.... I was puritanical the first year or two about everything ....... but, I found myself and my family isolated from the rest of the village .....

.... why is our country going down hill .......?

... there is nothing or no one to live up to .......

..... she plays outside everyday on the play ground at school ......

.... I just don't remember all this junk food when I was growing up .....

.... you have to find synthesis with the hayseed sugar zombie .....

... or move .... and we is stuck ........

... I'll just keep incouraging her to be "mindful" ........ and pass up sugar treats .....

.... last year I fought this thing tooth and nail ...... and all I got was dirty fat looks from fat ignorant freeking females .....

Amen!!

I grew up on meat and potatoes for every meal and Dr. Pepper and twinkess for snacks. I didn't have videos game or cable tv. I didn't have an ounce of fat on me and learned how to enjoy life.

People want to blame everyone else for their problems or have other people take care of their children for them.

Long live the homemade bike ramp and eating Halloween candy until you're sick. Its called "life", try it enjoy it.

I still say call in the Ninjas and give them the room number. But seriously folks, there will always be different aspects of why certain folks can eat a certain way. In my family diabetes runs rapid if you do not watch what you eat, while others can eat all they want and be skinny as heck. One parent knows ones own child and, yes, some eating habits are what they were raised on, but sometimes what they eat for many years is what kills them or makes their life miserable or has no effect on them. I think a key ingredient is to make sure your children are active. We can not make everyone conform in what we think it should be when it comes to eating and fitness, we can only control what we have in front of us and maybe influence others.

Yes, we still have those bike jumping kids, but they have been traded for skate boards. Not everyone is going to be an athlete kid, we still need our nerds, band kids, shop kids, and teachers pets. At the end what matters is what makes sense to you and your family.

I have one kid that watches her calories, but loves her waffles, sausage and syrup in the morning, but the rest of the day is health stuff........don't get it ...........yes, she's a nerd, a fit one at that.

ohhh, like there aren't ignorant fat males (which some of us just might happen to love):rof::rof::rof:

easy there hound dog...:Emoticon_hug:

Small town, bright lights, Saturday night,
Pinballs and pool halls flashing their lights.
Making change behind the counter in a penny arcade
Sat the fat girl daughter of Virginia and Ray

Lydia
Lydia hid her thoughts like a cat
Behind her small eyes sunk deep in her fat.
She read romance magazines up in her room
And felt just like Sunday on Saturday afternoon.

But dreaming just comes natural
Like the first breath from a baby,
Like sunshine feeding daisies,
Like the love hidden deep in your heart.
