Does anyone have any experience accessing a la mode remotely when the software is running from a server. My office is looking at converting to Wintotal. However, we commonly work from home and it would be expensive to buy multiple packages and multiple memberships. The salesman said we can run it from a server and access it remotely, only requiring 1 software package and 1 membership. Does anyone know if this will work efficiently?

If there is only 1 user.

Each user is another charge.

If you're accessing remotely, there may be some authentication issues.

Only one user can access a file at a time. Does that also allow for multiple remote users to present as a single user, and work many files at once?

You need better technical answers regarding the complications there.

Can more than one report be submitted at the same time through portal plugins with a single user? Do you even need that? probably multiple pdf creations at once would work, but beyond that - I foresee complications.

When I'm at home or on the road and need to remote access my work computer I use gotomypc.com.

I have copies of Wintotal on my PC and on my laptop and there's no extra charge for that, but I am the licensee. Technically, though - I could work in both at the same time and it doesn't kick me out of one when I open the other...so in that way I guess I could have two users on one license (though it would be stealing).

I'm surprised the salesman is advising you to do that - maybe he knows it won't work and that you'll end up buying a license for each user anyway?

.

The salesman claims that a la mode is fine with multiple users on one license, so who knows. Is there any lag time or other issues when using the software remotely?

who told you there were charges per user? they lied, or changed the software agreement. you can have as many users as you want, the only difference is that the drop downs and quick lists are user-based, meaning my quick lists do not show up when another appraiser logs in under his username. conversely, even if your entire office logged into aurora under the same user name you can still have multiple appraisers setup and sign it as any that you wish.

never had any authentication issues.

you can have more than one user open a report at the same time, you just have to select "override" when the software prompts you to. same thing happens if you do not close out a report correctly and it is "left open".

to the op:

we have been operating using remote access software for the past few years with no problems at all. aurora is installed on the main computer and then installed via the network to two other machines. i use team viewer (free) for remote access from home. team viewer allows me to connect to my desktop at work, so it is essentially the same thing as if i was sitting at my desk. it is a little slower than actually being there but there will always be some sort of a delay.

Thanks TRES, the remote access option looks like the way to go.
