Am I being ripped off???

That relative is making a ton of money from your labor, I hope it's on your husband's side. If you're unmarried, that relative is still a jerk. Bide your time, get certified, set up a home office, then steal his rolodex! :D

Rebecca,

Are you and your relative of middle eastern nationality? I hear that Arabic men pay their woman similar to your type wages. If you are (or not), gather your records and personal effects and get out quick! This is America. This is not the middle ages. You are being USED. Do you have a network of appraisal friends in your area? Talk to them
, nobody works for those slave wages not ever people that work in appraisal "sweat shops". RUN!!!

Florida :usa: Jerry

Rebecca,

Don't let your own fears stand in your way. As George said, make sure you get a copy of EVERYTHING you've worked on and take them home with you. Get whatever classes you might still need and apply for your certification ASAP!!!

You are being badly abused and it's past time to stand on your own. Just DO IT.

If you have questions after your out of there, come here and ask us! It's 10Xs worse that it's a relative doing this to you!!! I'd like to go punch him in the nose!!!

Rebecca,

You sound like a hard worker, come work for me and I'll DOUBLE your salary!!! :D

Like PC* said, Get out of there.

TC

*I'm guessing that doesn't stand for politically correct.

Yep, I know now that I should've checked around (and here) first to see what was more of a "norm" for trainee's getting paid. I just assumed my mentor would be fair and trusted him. Guess I learned the hard way. Thanks for all the input, especially Pam. Luckily I do have great support from the home front. Guess I'll trudge along as is and know that I earned everything I got! Thanks TC..a double in pay? I wouldn't know how to act! :P

That is shi*ty. Most people start out at between 35-50% for the first couple years....Realize its a relative but Id light a fire under his a** and let the chips fall where they may. Im sure your mom or dad would be interested in what this relative is doing.... Go on your own , get paid, and ask him really dumb questions from time to time..just to be annoying  ...

My mentor was (is, and always will be) my father. When I started out he took a very small amount, only because our accountant and lawyer told him he needed to for IRS reasons. (we are partners, and he needed to be paid for assisting me.) I would have actually preferred he took more, but as my father he wanted me to make as much as possible. After I became licensed, he would only take anything if the assignment was particularly difficult and I needed a lot of assistance. Once I became Certified, he wouldn't take anything. That is definitely more than he needed to do, but it seems to me that most relatives would tend toward the more generous side, not the make an easy living off of blood side. There is certainly nothing wrong with your family member mentor making money from your work, but who in the world does this to their own relatives?

Rebecca,

In this world of parsing words now, don't take TC's offer. Let's see what he said. He would double your salary.

How much is your current salary? $0, Right? After all, you are a contract employee. What is 2 x $0?

Bill,

took the words outta my mouth!

:D

Well thanks everyone for your input! I am definitely going to re-negotiate my situation since I can see this is not the norm pay for a trainee. Especially since I do have some experience now. Michael, it sounds like your dad is great and very un-selfish! That's how I would see relatives being. Unfortunately I was wrong about mine. Which reminds me once again that no one will look after you except you. What a disappointment it is though. Hard to respect someone who takes advantage of you BECAUSE you are a relative!
