Applying To VA Appraiser Panel

I would think the price of real estate, especially in Monterey county would make it difficult to use a VA loan.

Yes, that is true. VA does not cap the limit they can borrow. The VA does limit their own liability. VA loans are not very common in Monterey County. Mostly a lot of VERY wealthy Silicone Valley cash buyers. It's truly unfortunate to see what is happening.

The VA doesn't limit its benefits to PFC jar heads. Generals and low ranking enlisting folks that offered their life in protection of our country deserve every benefit they get. Their salaries while in service certainly don't reflect their 24/7 commitment to the greater cause. I've never heard a protest from Parris Island or Camp Lejune for an increase in minimum wage etc.

The VA does not accept appraiser trainee's. You need to be certified. I've been on the VA panel a long time. For some, it's good. For others, they can't stand it. You cannot refuse any request assigned to you. Some properties I appraise should be charged in the $1,000 to $1,500 range but you get nothing near that amount. Some could be completed for $300, and you get more than that. Most of the ones I complete require me to drive a minimum of 100 to 150 miles. No mileage fee for travel. It sort of all evens out at the end of the day.

This has been my apprehension all along with the VA. They are adding appraisers in AZ and two appraisers I know got on the panel. They both live across town and they are getting orders all over the PHX area. Although the fees are good, the tidewater issue and long travel distances force me to consider opportunity costs with other lender clients who might not pay as much, but pay enough to warrant not applying to the VA panel. I may do so anyways just to give it a shot.

Maricopa county is gigantic. VA allows you to limit your geographic area to selected cities within the county. much easier to manage if you stay closer to home.

i marvel at some of these responses. 100 to 150 miles for a single VA order scott r??? time to move to northern VA bro! i did 3 this morning and they were within a 10 mile radius. i was back home in 2 hours.

whats the big deal about tidewater? pull your comps, if the value for a sale looks like it might not make sale price just send a note to the lender to get the 48 hour clock running. no biggie!

Yep. Central California......covering (3) very large counties, with extraordinarily high gas prices and ridiculous tax rates and.........oh hell.....why do I live here?

You forgot one of the "benefits" of living in CA's central valley... the worst air pollution in the entire county

Good afternoon,

First post to this forum. I am looking to apply to the VA Panel in the coming weeks, I work in San Diego County. I have gathered several letters of recommendation as required.

My general inquiry was to see if anyone had recently been "accepted" to the VA Panel and when you had applied. I do not know much about the hiring process of the VA. Just looking for current "market conditions" if you will. :)

Any anecdotal help or evidence would be appreciated

Shane

So did you get on the panel? They contacted me too and i submitted my package for approval. How long did it take to hear back?
