Appraisal Institute Controversy Part 2

I wonder if AI educates PAREA students about Cert 11 on GSE work, and I wonder how the graduates are handling it when they begin appraising.

I have knowledge and experience in appraising this type of property in this market area.

Even in fee appraisal, I think it does, although maybe indirectly. If they support lowering the barrier to entry to a professional organization, and if they drop the ball to defend the general reputation of appraisal profession, then it would certainly impact you eventually. I'm not a member, and I think I'm less inclined to become one now, but I do have an interest in seeing how this plays out.
That's a fair point, and to expand on it I've already decided that I will not patronize any professional org or QE/CE provider that is participating in PAREA. That's easy for me to say, though. I haven't spent any money on AI courses or resources in many years.

There seems to be an unfortunate dissimilarity between AI members and the direction of the organization. In class, the instructors and other members I've interacted with were generally desiring to attain higher quality work products and promote the profession as a whole. AI leadership has their own ideas, though.

I have a lot of respect for many of the members I've interacted with over the years, but that's always based on what they do and how they conduct themselves. Not their qualifications.

In Appraisal, "qualifications" means designations, but more importantly, "leadership" positions - and that means corruption in most cases.

I like this video from Andrew Bustamente (a Trump supporter BTW - with a future):

Although his talking about the FBI and CIA, this applies to most organizations, especially in the federal government.

The core residential members and their leadership are on different ends of the spectrum. Commercial members drives AI, and you’d be surprised how commercial appraisers really have no idea about the unethical behavior going on on the residential side. Most are shocked when they hear what’s going on. I don’t know how AI is run, but it must be a select view that are doing to voting. The AI members I know are only in it for their MAIs. They say the organization is worthless, but their job required the MAI.

The cronyism in appraisal has always been rather open. The leaders often on public forums or other public arenas will admit to and preach cronyism as a fact of life;

"Yes, if he doesn't want to go along, he just won't get any work! ...."
"You have to pay your dues. ...."

Bunton, Amorin, ... on down to local chapter leaders and over to CBRE, Valbridge, ...., managers and VPs. Concepts taught by the AI are swept under the rug for the biggest clients, such as insurance companies and the like. Of course, over the past several years, - the big hoax over appraiser discrimination. What a shame!

So true.
