The Case of the Appraisal Institute vs. our Membership:
Once again, we are facing another scandal in The Appraisal Institute. A very promising candidate for Vice-President, Byron Miller, was nominated by the National Nominating Committee. The board of the Institute together with the executives decided last minute that Byron cannot be voted for by the board as sexual harassment allegation surfaced in the last minute. Of course all completely without base.
I know Byron for a long time, and cherish his integrity, his intelligence, his knowledge as an expert appraiser, and of course his leadership ideas. Cindy Chance, the true and one and only CEO this Institute ever had (since Grubbe left), had similar leadership ideas and was sacked in the meanest way one can imagine. Byron, who might have implemented some of these leadership ideas wasn’t even given a chance.
So let’s count the scandals:
1. Beata Swacha CFO – Discrimination accusations – settled/no lawsuit – truth will never be revealed.
2. Alissa Akins – found errors in testing materials, became a whistleblower – to my knowledge the lawsuit is pending.
3. Cindy Chance CEO – accused the AI leadership of being in bed with the AMCs (and besides that was sexually harassed by the one who shall not be named) – the lawsuit was settled; we will never know the truth.
4. Byron Miller – against the will of the NNC, and without proper reasons, removed from the possibility to become VP. I hope this will result in lawsuit #4. But wait, that will be settled too, right? Because no one shall ever know.
Besides the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of our membership dollars are spent to settle these lawsuits and/or pay huge amounts of legal fees, we know NOTHING, because everything is being kept secret.
Now – this is the entire modus operandi of the board. Their knowledge that everything will blow over. And here is why:
Whenever we encountered a new scandal with this current board, the social media outlets are brimming of posts and comments. Everyone is excited, angry, and ready to change the world – and the Institute. In the end – nothing happens, and I figured out why:
There will never be an uprising of a big group of members. If 10 people leave the Institute in a group it will have no effect, if 100 people leave, it will have no effect. Maybe if 500 leave, it might have an effect. But you will NEVER find that many people who are willing to give up the designation to fight a corrupt leadership. Therefore, every single scandal will be swept under the rug. They all know it will blow over, because everyone is holding onto their designations and with that, we all allow this board to stick to their seats and their so very important positions.
There you have it – feel free to share.
