Engineer's 100' fiberglass tape, prongs bent on the tape, paper towel, clipboard, ten grid graph paper, mechanical pencil (with an eraser), been working extremely well for 44 years so why change now?

I'll bite....what's the paper towel for?

To wipe the dirt and dust off your fingers when pulling the tape back in.

Have you ever got a fiberglass burn from sliding the tape through your fingers while walking a long wall? Paper towels or gloves reduce the friction.

To grab the fiberglass tape very taunt as you go walking to the next corner. Between the bent prongs on the tape and the paper towel the tape sticks to the corner even if it is 100' long. And yes you can wipe your fingers off as you are measuring. Also cleans the tape as you are using it. And does prevent tape burn.

Have you ever broken off a plant or pulled over a flower pot with your tape? Have you ever dropped the hook onto someone's new hardwood floor making a loud and embarrassing sound?

One time I put the hook on someones new colored stucco which hadn't dried yet....

MLS on my phone? Why? I have a mobile desk in the passenger seat of my truck. Upon it is my laptop with wireless connection. MLS is available in the field that way.

I Google map all my comps so I can plan my route after inspection. I have GPS with the route as well.

I use a laser, tape, and clipboard for measuring and can verify my sketch on my laptop in minutes if it is a complex building. Otherwise I can calc my GLA using *gasp* my calculator.

I use my phone to call people. I use my computer to research and write reports. I use my camera to take photos. I use my brain to appraise.

There's too much white-noise out there. Keep it simple, use your tools for what they were designed to be used for. A butter-knife isn't a screwdriver. Everything else is crap.

Waiting for the Ipad 2. Looks like it will have a camera built in.

I've always worried about my tape being sucked into a compressor when the fan kicked on while measuring. That would be pretty exciting for about nine seconds.

Ever since a mad hornet attacked me on the elbow which caused me to toss my camera about 30 feet, I have been leery about carrying expensive electronics on site.
