Hello,
I am in search of a quality, professional mentor here in NH. This July I completed the minimum requirements for my NH apprentice permit including 2008 USPAP. I come complete with computer, customer service and clerical skills. If anyone is willing to take me on or knows someone who is please let me know.
Many Thanks,
Jennifer Chase

Jennifer,

Welcome to the Appraisers Forum, and congratulations on completing your education requirements. The bad news is, as I'm sure that you're finding out, is that the appraisal business is in the midst of a severe decline. Not only are appraisers hesitant to take on an apprentice due to lack of business, the lenders are leery of trainees and more and more reports are being reviewed (reviewers tend to more critical of a trainees work).

Long time appraisers are leaving the industry for greener pastures as AMC's garner more of the market share. If you can bring in your own clients you may be able to find an honest mentor, otherwise, you are most likely to end up doing work for an AMC with a supervisor that you may have never met (and still checks the "did inspect" box).

Be very careful who you work for and insist on maintaining your ethics. Control your signature and make sure you are paid on time or run far and fast.

Where are you located?

Jim

Hi Jim,
Thanks for responding. I'm located in Concord, but willing to work anywhere in the state. I'm hoping at this point to find employment at least within the appraisal industry (most likely the non-lucrative data collection part) even if it doesn't satisfy my experience requirements until the industry recovers. In the meantime, I will likely take more classes (I'm trying to find an Innovia tutorial) and gain knowledge wherever I can.
