Background Checks

1st I hope your friend is upfront, Yes, people do make mistakes and do need a second chance. But from the Mentor's point of view, I would be very nervous with your friend. I have been in homes, where I was all alone and seen money left on dresser, not just change, paper money and in a few cases, alot of it. I never touched nor would I ever want anyone that I work with to even think about touching it. Because not only would, the person would took it pay for the thief, I sure the Mentor would lose that client, which assigned the job, but word would get around, that this company hired theifs, and the company could lose, more than just the one client. That one theif could effect the jobs of every one in the office. Trust and our name is all we have as appraisers, to build and maintain a business with.

Bill,

The State of Colorado does do background checks on all who apply for a license at any level of appraising. It is a new (within the last year) thing and they are very thorough. Stewart Leach from the Co Board of Appraisers spoke at a meeting for an association I belong to on just that topic last November. The background checks is something he feels very strongly about. He made a point of explaining that a record does not always mean that they won't get a license but lying about it on the application will. My advice would be for your friends to contact the board and explain their situations before they invest in the classes to be sure. Here is Mr Leach's email (from the website) stewart.leach
