Bad attitude

Maybe it would help if they had tip jars on the counter. Hey, it works for bartenders and waitresses right. If your waitress wasn't working for a tip, I bet you anything she could care less if your food is cooked right.

I really do try to be nice to everyone I come in contact with at the courthouse especially since they are helping me. Sometimes I think it would be easier to replace them with robots!

Paul,
No words needed, bring in a small box of choclates, (a sampler); as you revisit, make the box just slightly larger each time. Eventually, they'll kiss your a** , just so they get some.

After a few months of that, you can mix it up a little, remember they're cooped up inside with some idiot town assessor who thinks who he/she is and may treat the others with little respect.

Should you elect to take on this mission, you will be rewarded in the future, this message will self destruct

 as a former waitress who knew a lot very concientious gals and guys waiting tables, I am not happy with you, Paul... I'm gonna sic Betty-Sue, Vivian and Angela on you, steely hairs professionals all!

Most wait staff now get around $1.15 an hour for all their hustle! Minimum wage does NOT apply in most states. They have to PAY for any food they eat, and the IRS will dun them if the IRS thinks they didn't claim enough money regardless of whether they actually earned it or not... AFTER they share with the cooks and busboys... And benefits? don't make me laugh.

If I can see reasonable effort I tip verry very high, if bad attitude I still tip something...

The underworked and underpaid county staff at least have reasonably secure jobs and rock solid benfit packages, and better be reasonably courteous or I'll show up at the next County commisioners meeting and gripe.

Most of ours are pretty great folks, but there is one county that I can't stand for reasons similar to those listed above. And I TRIED donuts...

I used to work in an assessors office. Much of my day was filled with taking phone calls from homeowners who were upset about their taxes, or some other problem, most were rude and from time to time you'd get cussed out, the ladies in the office usually responded with bitterness or some nasty comment, and I could see that they would take it out on everyone that walked in the door. As an appraiser I face more complaining day to day than I ever did working in the assessors office, but thats just part of the job. I've met some assessors staff workers who were both very bitter and angry and some with great attitudes, I think it takes a special kind of person to work in an assessors office, the pay is low, theres no real incentive, and they have to deal with complaining homeowners all day(we can all relate!) I just ask for the information I need with a smile, say thank you, and leave with a smile, theres nothing more I can do, if they are in a bad mood, so be it. I for one will stay in a good mood, as my children and wife seem to like me better that way....

I am really fortunate in having a good tax and deeds office to work with in Carteret County, NC. Of course it helps that I was a tax appraiser in an earlier life. But it is not just me that gets this service. Of the two adjoining counties that I work in; one is good and the other is improving. So it could be worse.

Of all of the counties we work in, only 1 is like that. It is nothing you can hang your hat on but there is an underlying level of discontent. We have a couple of counties in which the employees are great people and very helpful. This particular one county is the result of long term bad management and poor supervision. We just live with it.

Rich'd,

Right out of the graduate school textbook: Organizations take on the character of the people who 'rule' them! Comes from the fact that the 'good' people leave, and only the similar characters remain. Kinda like the Democratic Party ..

This thread got me thinking about the huge differences in the services provided to me, by Assessor's Offices in the several counties I work in on a regular basis.

The best one will fax me maps, record cards, deeds, or what ever I need , just for the asking, all over the phone.

Another will give out no data whatsoever over the phone, yet will let me have free run of all files in the office when I go in in person.

A couple have allmost all data on line, or is downloaded to the MLS Database.

The worst one has been known to kick out of town appraisers out of his office unless they divludge the client, lender, borrower, address, and the estimated value of the property. He also brought a former assistant of mine to tears, by continually harrassing her when she asked questions.

Considering that all of the above are covered by the same state statutes and regulations, is it any wonder why many folks have so little trust or respect for elected officials.

I recently scored mucho brownie points in one of my local assessor's office. There was this certain woman (I use this term loosely) in the office working on a title search. She had 4" heels, tight 1980's pants and looked like a Cher want-a-be. She broke in line in front of me and began a 30 minute assualt on the 2 young ladies attending to her. No matter what they did, they could not satisfy her. Meanwhile, I had moved on to the public access computer and I was going cross-eyed trying to do my look-ups and tune her out at the same time. Finally a combination of my recent diagnosis of Graves disease, PMS and appraiser burn-out tookover and I turned around and said "WILL YOU PLEASE SHUT UP YOU ARE GIVING ME A HEADACHE!" We got into a little yelling match which ended with her telling me to mind my own businness and I telling her that when you ===== as loud as she does she makes it my business. The two ladies working for the county were falling all over themselves snickering behind their hands. Now when I go in there they will do anything for me.

This is a classic.

However, if a man were to do the same thing, he would be charged with sexual abuse(yelling at a strange woman in public), indecent exposure (opening his mouth), assault with a blunt instrument (presenting his logic) and at least 10 or 12 other things.

All I can say is, "Way To Go!"

Stand close to me when I go into the assessor office in case I need you.
