I haven't heard of this contest, so I can't comment on it. What I do know about them: while in college, I responded to an add before tax season, to earn extra money. They put people in the field, preparing tax returns, after a couple of weeks of training. This was a few (cough, cough) years ago, and things may have changed. But I did not continue, feeling that I would/could not pass my own internal competency test. I also know a retired CPA that works for H&R Block during tax season for a little extra. I don't want to roll the dice, walk in off the street, and maybe get the retired guy, maybe get the kid w/a couple weeks of training that never had to file more than the short form for his own return. That's all.

As far as these things taking 1/2 hour, I don't know. It can take me more than 1/2 hour to pull comps for a report after I've seen the subject. Maybe I'm slow. Maybe I'm thorough. Maybe I'm anal. Good for those that are good enough at these to do them in 1/2 hour. Or, you just may be getting a McAppraisal. Minimum wage, minimum quality. Roll them dice!
