As the weather turns cold around here and with repos on the rise, there will be plenty of squaters out there. If you are doing these homes, be careful.
 
You should be aware in any and all types of weather...But you are correct, winter does bring an additional sense of being careful.
 
Having a gun permit and the firearm to necessitate that permit is also not a bad idea. If that is too extreme for some, a can of mace is a good alternative. You can never be too careful...
 
Bring your big dog. Train him to bark on command. :-) Have him do it when you open the front door.
 
Yes be very careful. Especially the way the economy is right now, people are breaking into vacant homes left and right.

I went to inspect a HUD foreclosure today, when I got there the front door had been kicked in and the furnace and some copper piping stolen. This was in an area with several forclosures and the thieves had hit a number of them.

You just never know when you're going to walk in on one when they are in the middle of their heist.

I filled out my application for my lifetime concealed weapon permit last year, but never turned it in. I think it's time to do that.
