I currently use Firefox and have for many years now. In recent months, it seems my surfing the internet has been slowed down substantially. I don't want anything to do with crooked Google so I won't use Chrome, and I was never impressed with Internet Explorer. I've also tried Opera, but had slow down problems with that too. Are there any recommendations for a good web browser for appraisal work?

If you have any real time programs like antivirus, malware, adware, security, etc., they will slow down your web browser.

I am running on High Sierra macOS. It has unix tools such as Activity Monitor that will tell how much CPU %, CPU time, memory, threads, disk, etc., each program is consuming including root programs used by the operating system.

Google Chrome uses an enormous amount of resources with multiple helper threads. But, Chrome has excellent loading response because all these helper threads keep the browser fed continuously.

Malwarebytes uses a lot of resources too and intercepts calls to and from your browser(s) as does adware programs.

Firefox uses additional helper threads and extensions and does not play well with Malwarebytes or adware.

I use a combination of Google and Safari to browse the web.

PS - I use Safari for secure browsing like going to my bank and broker websites, email sites, etc.

Yes, I've run the system resources monitor while multiple tabs of Firefox are open and it uses a tremendous amount of the computer's resources. Something in the background seems to be running on Firefox to slow it down because I occasionally get a pop up asking if I'd like to stop the program or wait for it to complete doing whatever it's doing. I checked the add-ons to Firefox and there is nothing, so I'm afraid it is something they built into one of their latest updates.

I just let google have all my data. Positives outweigh the negatives.
I won't surrender to Google. Besides avoiding the use of Chrome, I've also replaced the Google search engine with Duckduckgo on all my devices. Duckduckgo won't track you and it is just as fast and effective as Google search. I switched about a month ago and it was quick and painless. No regrets.

It's not really the speed that is important to me. I don't think any service or product is noticeably slower or faster than the other. The main positive is the syncing between devices. I can sit down with any device anywhere and sign into chrome and it is the same as if sitting at my desktop or my personal phone. Maybe other products do that these days too.

Its a new world out there, and its not just Google tracking us. The World of Internet is only growing. 1984 is here

Using an ad blocker speeds up browsing. You have to disable it on some site such as this one. I can recommend uBlock origin for Firefox.

I have run a test with different programs that filter ads and malware using dslreports.com. No question about the bandwidth degradation and latency.

This test requires your browser's full attention for accurate results. Run the test when your network is quiet, and don't switch to other applications or change browser tabs during the test. A few Windows security and privacy software packages can block the test or slow the browser.
