If I was just beginning, the very first books I would buy would be Henry Harrisons Guides.

Single Family URAR. I has all the phrases you could use in 20 years! Line by line information on filling out the form.

Condo Guide

Small Income Guide. These also have all the Fannie Mae guidelines, FHA, and VA requirements. Excellent for all appraisers.

Then I would make sure I had the Fannie Mae booklets including rural properies.

Marshall and Swift Cost book is expensive but well worth it. There is so much information in that book, I could teach from it for a year and not cover everything.

Harrision's Houses (3rd edition) Great information and way to learn construction and styles.

Wow! This stuff is all great, thankyou so much.
Doug, I'm sure you had to dig a bit to get all that info writen down!

It's much appreciated,
Jenn

I am presently taking Real Estate courses and have found the Instructor's book extremely "readable" for someone who is just starting out. The Appraisal book is titled "Residential Real Estate Appraisal" by George Miller and Katy Gallagher, ISBN 0-324-14054-1. George Miller has been in the business for over 40 years and he is extremely knowledgeable on the subject.

JennC:

Each new appraiser should have a library add to it as budget permits. At the beginning, the following are essential.

Copy of the ANSI measuring guide or the download from the North Carolina Appraisal Board on property measurement

Doug, thanks for your list of recommended reading. Regarding the ANSI measuring guide, do you happen to know the exact name or have any further information? I would like to get a copy, but find I need a title...

Thanks for taking the time to help us beginners.

Remarkbly the ANSI manual is buried on a site on the web for free.

Go to this site, go to education material and click on the 1999 course guide. you can print out the relevant pages.
