Bye, Bye, ASC -Appraisal Subcommittee on the verge of shutting down

Here’s my opinion having worked inside the beast.

The ASC is well run and every person I’ve dealt with there is a true professional. Their budget is nominal given that they perform in person reviews requiring hotel and flights.

I don’t have too much insight on TAF except to say they tend to give lip service to input. I would love to see TAF restructured, massively.

As for the states, consolidation for appraiser licensees into a dozen or so regions should happen, at least for investigations. Some states are so small that a single attorney is responsible for up to a couple of dozen different state licensing agencies. Also, abolish Boards in favor of an agency comprised of state paid investigators and enforcement management who can make decisions on cases (licensees can challenge that decision at an administrative hearing).

AMC licensing and enforcement should be done at a national level. It doesn’t make sense for an AMC to file for a certificate in up to 55 jurisdictions. It would also help with enforcement as AMCs are challenging for individual states to take action on.

Just some food for thought.

Time for the Tony Robbins motivation seminar to get that negative doom and gloom attitude adjustment.

Think about the positives like going through peoples homes that take $500,000 a year incomes to afford to buy. Or seeing those $250,000 Lamborghinis in the eight car garage.

That's how I felt at 25 years old driving into Beverly Hills or Newport Beach in a Chevy Silverado.

How else could I get motivated and get paid to do it. Hell I had to put lawn equipment in the truck bed so when the police drove bye they didn't think I was casing the neighborhood's and hot chicks would ask if I also cleaned pools. LMAO

About 30-years ago I felt guilty driving up in a 535 BMW to houses that had less value than the car. I sold it and bought Jeep Grand Cherokees for the next 25-years.

A (used) 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee was my favorite vehicle that I've owned. A total piece of junk mechanically (v8) but looked good and had a nice interior.

Drove a Cherokee Sport. Best riding SUV ever. It went over Weston Pass as well as any other Jeep or SUV. Kept breaking the belts on the windows. Once it was 28 and snowing and I was 30 miles from home. Rolling the window down to get the last shot of the day as a street view...broke 6" down. Was a cold ride home. I think I went thru 3 belts.

The do you want to be an appraiser story of Dumb and Dumber in a VW Beetle in the infamous City of Compton in early eighties at the home being appraised.

I was hanging with a friend who was 10 years older than me but a experienced designated appraiser who owned a fee sweat shop with like 15 appraisers in name only that he paid like $40.00 bucks a pop when he charged $200.00. He was married to a Trophy Wife and he owned a Twin Engine plane and drove flashy cars.

One morning I'm driving by his office and stop in and the parking lots empty and it's like 10 AM..didn't see his Corvette but walked in a he was alone looking like he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.

I gave the usual hey what's up greeting and he sadly told me that three weeks earlier his Trophy Wife cleaned out his bank account's and taken everything and fled the country. I'm like so were are all your appraiser runners..he says i can't pay them and they turned me into state franchise tax. Now I'm like so now what ? He says well I'm at the bottom but will start over and hey jump in the car I'm going to Compton to do a easy report you can keep me company.

Boom the Pos VW Beetle is his new wheels his brother loaned him to drive he's 6.3 and I'm 6.1 and we could barely fit into the Pos. Off we go looking like Dumb and Dumbest 30 miles West at 55 Mph. Finally we get to Compton and pull in front of the house in the clown car.

The only two white guys in CPT.
We go up to the door and a young black kid opens the door and says you guys the appraisers? John says yeah just need to measure and a few photo's and we will be done. The kids about 19 -20 years old and his Tennis Shoes and jacket looked more valuable than the VW we parked.

A few minutes later as we leave the
Kid says hey is there any money doing appraisals ? and John responds yeah i do real good and maybe you can work for me. The kid about then says is that car yours ? John says yeah it's a loaner my Corvettes in the shop. Suddenly the Kid says I call bull**** your just two broke dicks. John doesn't say anything and we sheepishly get into the VW and off we go to shoot comp photos.

John said that was the lowest day in his career broke and driving a old VW Beetle and being told by a kid he was a broke dick. I was busting up laughing and said well John you are broke and you can be a dick so what the hell the kid was spot on. Lol

I know the feeling. Going thru divorce and sold my 89 diesel truck (this is 1991) and bought with the balance an 83 Chevy Blazer II or whatever they called them. Been wrecked and patched. It would die when you turned left too sharp. 4WD though. So, I get sent down to value a tract sold out of a huge ranch, and 3 miles from paved road, to the entry gate. Then you had to cross a creek then go up a hill on a private lane to the property. Crossing the creek it apparently jerked the vacuum hose off the actuator to the 4WD. Coming back, I nearly stalled out in the creek for lack of traction. I would have easily had a 3 mile walk to the nearest house. My lawyer had advised me not to sell or buy anything until final and of course, she fought me like a tiger for 18 months. I went to a Tulsa courthouse to finalize the divorce (we filed there because she moved to OK and we could proceed six months sooner than in Arkansas.) Then next week I found a used Jeep Wrangler and snapped it up and got rid of that crappy little Blazer as fast as I could find a buyer.
