To become licensed you must belong to a Canadian appraisal organization. There are two appraisal organizations in Canada, The Canadian National Association of Real Estate Appraisers and The Appraisal Institute of Canada. I am a member of The Canadian National Association of Real Estate Appraisers (CNAREA). The Canadian National Association of Real Estate Appraisers has a formal alliance with the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers in the USA.
That is really interesting. I have heard of the Institute but not CNAREA. Do you know if the Appraisal Institute of Canada has an alliance with the Appraisal Institute in the USA? Are there residential and commercial appraisers in both groups? Or is one more for residential and one more for commercial?

Stephen, the AIC does not have an alliance with the AI. None of the courses we take translates, nor do our designations. Believe me, I have tried! Apparently 20 years of experience here and an SRA means nothing to the AIC....

Stephen, there are residential and commercial appraisers in both organizations. I believe the AIC designations are CRA - Canadian Residential Appraiser, and AAIC - Accredited Appraiser Canadian Institute. I believe Serena is correct with her post above concerning the AIC as I had a somewhat similar experience with them. CNAREA designations are DAR - Designated Appraiser Residential, DAC - Designated Appraiser Commercial, and CAR - Certified Appraisal Reviewer. I am a DAR,CAR and currently working on my DAC.

Serena:

Thanks, wondering if they recognize MRICS (Member of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) course work, designation experience, etc.,? Do you know? No doubt AI (USA) treats the Canadians with the same disrespect. However, the AI (USA) has been opening many of its doors to other non-US organizations over the last several years. That is how I recently became a MRICS. When I retire I do not know if I will be staying in the US and not sure I want to give up appraising all together. My mother is Canadian. I have a lot of family in Ontario.

Hi Stephen, you would need to contact them, but I think any of the RICS designations hold more sway.

My husband Canadian; we want to eventually settle back in Canada and I want to continue appraising. We are looking into venues on which to accomplish this. I joined the NAIFA specifically to get reciprocity with the Canadian version since the AIC is completely contemptuous of the AI for some reason or another (maybe a slight on this side first?).

I am a DAR,CAR and currently working on my DAC.
Good for you. How much does a good DAC make in Canada?
(maybe a slight on this side first?).
I have no doubt, as you and I have talked about before there are so many arrogant SOB in AI.

Vernon, I'm confident that Bourgeois and Company will look after your needs just fine. I will mention them to my colleague when I get to talk with him, hopefully tomorrow. You never know, he may be familiar with them as well.

Stephen, not sure about a DAC but some DAR's I know are doing over 100,000 per year. I unfortunately, am not that busy. I am in a rural area and don't very often get the "cookie cutter" type appraisal assignments. Keep in mind though, the Alberta economy has been very active the last few years and is probably not typical of the rest of Canada.

Vernon, I got hold of my colleague from Edmonton this morning. Apparently there is a lot of activity going on in that area and in fact he was actually there at the site on another assignment. The overall area is referred to as the Strathcona Industrial Heartland located north of Fort Saskatchewan. It will also serve the Redwater area where there are a number of upgraders going in. Needless to say, the Town of Lamont is quite excited about it all. It should be very good for the whole area. Employment opportunities abound!!! Good luck to you and best wishes on your assignment.

Roy,
Thank you for the information on appraising in Alberta. I was wondering, is it similar in BC. The wife and I still daydream of moving north from WA. Possibly up to Prince George, Prince Rupert or we really like the Fraser-Burns Lakes area.

Hi John,
I don't believe there are licensing requirements in BC as of yet. I’m not positive, but I think licensing is required only in Alberta, NB, and NS at this time. The two appraisal organizations are national with CNAREA being international as well.
