I always understood that if a legal description "followed the meandering" of a water course that any natural change to the path of the water also changed the boundaries of the involved properties.

There is a little hamlet near St. Joseph, Missouri that used to be in Missouri but is now in Nebraska due to a change in the course of the Missouri River.
