I have the scenerio of this situation right now. Currently have the offer to interview w/ the city of orange county for the appraiser trainee position. However, I live in the Bay Area (No. Cal) and my interview is a few days after April. Should I attend or turn it down? I would welcome the thought of re-locating to so. cal but it is not for sure that I'll end up getting the job. Should I just keep on trying here and stay in the Bay Area??? What would you do?

Hello Don,
I used to work in government work prior to starting in appraisal. This is what I would do:

Schedule the interview. Then plan on taking a day or two and traveling down to Orange County to interview for the job and check out the area. Orange County is not a cheap area to live in (although, probably not worse than the Bay area) and you will need to see where that appraiser trainee pay will take you for housing.

I would also ask HR to meet with someone that is doing the job you will be interviewing for while you are visiting. Many times you can glean some great info about the work environment, promotional opportunities, etc. from someone on the inside. At the minimum this will get you an office tour and let the County know you are a serious candidate.

Many government jobs have panel style interviews. If this is your first one, ask someone you know in Gov't or PM me for interview assistance. Good Luck!

If you go, check out the map. There is no "City of Orange County". There is the city of Orange, in Orange County, you need to determine which one is doing the hiring (probably the county).

You couldn't pay me to leave the Bay Area to go back to Orange County, where I grew up when they actually had orange groves. Too shallow, too smoggy, and no open space.
