I am thinking about trying to clean the printheads on my HP Officejet Pro 8500A printer. I have two of them and the print heads are clogged on one and the other is starting to get clogged. The price of new printheads is between $50 to $65 each. I think I can clean the ones I have a lot cheaper. Has anyone ever tried this before? I found a video on Youtube showing how to do it. The cost of the print heads is almost as much as I can get a printer for.

On the display of the actual printer, there should be a tool box/ wrench character, in that group of directions is a function to clean the printheads I think. I have had HP's for decades and I know exactly what you are talking about. It's worth the shot to try, why waste money.

Self cleaning just forces ink through the print heads. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If that doesn't work, check e-bay for prices. Get OEM, though.

Noreen,

I've used the clean printheads feature on the printers and it doesn't work. Looks like the jets must be clogged up too much.

Resguy,

I've checked on ebay and the cheapest I could find was maybe $30 for a referb.. That would be $60 for both print heads and $120 for both printers. I think I'll try to clean them.

Upgrade to a laser printer.

For a hundred you can get a Brother 2270DW on sale (or less).

One toner will get you 100+ reports worth of work file data and a copy of the report.

Buy a more cost effective laser BW printer like Brother HL2270DW. Only costs a measly $110 and kicks ***.

If you need color, I did not mean to waste your precious time of AF. If BW works for you, this is the most popular BW laser printer on Amazon for good reason.

If you need a scanner, buy a Scansnap S1500. Check the reviews around the globe. It is by far the best scanner available and well worth the price if time is of value to you.

If you were using non HP ink (officemax refills, etc) it has been my experience that the ink is not as clean or as functional. There is lot of engineering that ors into that stuff.

I have an HP Office Jet Pro 8000 that I have used a few too many non HP Black inks & cleaning the heads doesn't work for very long. The same thing happened to my Office Jet Pro 5400-I think that was the number.

That series is really fast printing, especially in draft mode. And, using the high capacity cartridges, it is less expensive than Laser.

Get a new printer. They come with ink & new print heads:)

The OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus is $160 on Amazon & Staples. Make sure it is the 8600 Plus & not the regular 8600.

That is what I am using for a few months now. Great scanner & copy function, legal size scanning bed & draft printing as fast as my HP 8000 (non MFC) printer.

I have had the OfficeJet Pro 8600 for a couple years and it is a great machine.
