I am a licensed appraiser and I really want to visit my local credit unions about possible work. My question is, for those that are getting work from CU's, how do you approach them? Do you call set up a meeting? Who should I be asking to speak to there? Or should I just walk in? Just looking for tips on the best approach!

My experience is CUs are worse than banks for appraising. They want to be real cheap, and the one I worked with dropped me fast when my MV was less than what borrower was expecting on a refi.

Other than that, treat like a regular brick and mortar bank. Just go in, talk to mortgage lender or branch manager. Explain quickly why you are there (no false pretenses).
I've always had as much CU work as I wanted, which was little because their fees were always low in my area.

Many use a CUSO for underwriting and appraisal ordering as well. The midwest uses TUAS as lot, not sure if they get out west or not.

In my market. It seems almost all of the credit unions use AMCs. Used to get quite a bit of work from about 5 different credit unions from a small AMC. Small panel, good fees, no stips, no headaches. Until they got bought out by Classless. Then it became large panel and lowest bidder. The Honda credit union uses NVS. A number of credit unions in my area go through myCUmortgage. Who manages the process but uses an AMC. As far as how to approach local offices. I agree with Overimprovement

Most In CA use AMC and do not have their own fee panels anymore .

I used to just walk in and introduce myself along with my business card and a box of pastries from Ettore's European Bakery. It used to work about half the time.

Those days in CALI are long about 25 years ago :) LOL

My local credit unions are by far my best clients. Quick pay, few stips, long turn times.

They have an appraisal department that orders separate from the loan officers. They probably have a means for getting in the rotation, but I'm sure it varies by CU.
