Because a POA can act in place of an individual ONLY while the individual is alive.I have never heard of power of attorney for the deceased.
Example: I was POA for my mom who lived in FL. The house was in her name only. She developed a brain aneurysm and was placed into hospice, died within 10 days. To keep the house out of probate, I deeded it (signed by POA) to my brother and sister the day before Mom died. That way we were able to dispose of the house immediately after death instead of waiting approx. 6 months and paying a bunch of lawyer costs for probate to clear it. We cleared it out, painted it, and had it sold within 45 days.
