I am over weight. My blood pressure, my blood sugar and my general well being are in danger. Partly due to stress and partly due to being overweight. Appraisal is a sedentary career, therefore I must do something and fast.

Right now I am 6-4 and weight 270lbs .... I want to lose 50lbs .... I have changed my diet to exclude anything white ..... bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, etc ...... Diet drinks and water .... off the coffee ..... I plan to begin walking everyday ...... I have thought about drugs and TV diets, but I believe I can do it myself .... with a little help from my friends. .... Waddaya say .... Can I get back into 38's again?

Doug

Some of what I am going to say is just ranting, but I have a long standing experience with the weight loss subject because of my wife who has always been overweight all of her life. She is considered by all standards to be obese, smokes, and now has diabetes. I, on the other hand am not and weighed about 140 when we got married 32 years ago. She went from diet to diet gaining and losing like her body was a yo-yo.

I was going to college and became curious about the weight loss issue and set out to do my own study. In a psychology course, I fasted for 5 days with juices only and another time for 3 days on only water. The goal was to not lose weight. The idea was that weight loss is an attitude thing. Over the course of the days, I lost 1 pound and nothing over the 3 day fast.

To me, that was amazing that I could consume nothing but water and lose no weight. Finished the class and moved on with my life.

Fast forward to 2003 and Dr Phil. This guy took that attitude idea and expanded it to whole way of life and 7 steps. Since I have never liked diets like Atkins, or whatever flavor is in this week, Dr Phil's ideas of a complete lifestyle change is the way I would go.

What I'm saying, some extra food, by itself, isn't the only problem. It's the whole lifestyle that needs to be changed. I believe that if you don't change the whole, then you will go from one diet to the next with the weight going up and down.

By what you have stated above, you need to lose some weight and that can be done, but something like Dr Phil with his support groups around the country may be more useful, than staying away from a few foods.

Hope this helps and gives you some ideas.

The foods thing was for my blood sugar, not to lose weight ..... I need more excercise ... period ..... Lifestyle change is a little tough for me right now ... there are things that I have no control over .... however, I believe it is possible that changing one thing can affect the others in a positive manner .... So I am willing to start there .... after all the knee surgeries and back surgery, and now my blood pressure and blood sugar problems, losing weight is not an option ... it HAS to happen .... Thanks for the input Randy ...

Atkins, scarsdale, cabbage soup, all carb diet, no carb diet......

Bottom line: Eat less, exercise more.

Easy to say, hard to do, but it works!

Thought I could say "been there, done that" but just had my sleep apnea study completed and the doc last Friday said that I was such a classic case that my records may make the next text book. In my case, there are 5 ways to correct the problem: lose weight, lose weight, lose weight, get a sleep machine, or an operation (no guarantee on the latter). Therefore, in order to remain alive, I also have to lose weight, although not to the extent of your problem. Was told to stay off the book & tv diets, be reasonable in eating, do it slowly and stop before you think you are full. In ten minutes or so, your mind will begin to tell you that in fact you are full. And EXERCISE. Even begin with walking, but do it religiously. I have always belonged to an exercise club but attended it sporadically. That will change. And they always have these classes where you exercise to music with a leader, making it fun, doing it at your own pace. Make it a part of your daily or every other day routine. Either first thing in the am, or after the workday. My son-in-law's mother is now in intensive care with blood flow problems, and she is only 52 but sedentary. Lets not end up like her. We can be each other's mentor - I only have to get down to 200 or so, but it is not the amount but rather the effort to do it. Maybe others in the same condition can join us in our mutual efforts.

Cuz,

On 01/01/04 I went on the "Leggett modified semi-Adkins thing" diet, basically no sugar or bread. I dropped 15lbs overnight and have kept it off. I can and do enjoy both from time to time but not everyday. I've always been a big meat, bird, fish, egg & etc eater so it wasn't that big of a change for me.

For my taste the Sam's Choice sugar/caffine free drinks taste better than the other brands. Splenda tastes better than pink or blue pack sugar substitutes. I'll check with Red and see what she has to add about what we've been eating and report back.

PS: Just to rub it in, this past weekend we had another batch the Deer Roll-ups I had sent you the recipe for. Man, I am so impressed with my cooking skills!

Brother you kill me!! Sitting here typing this with a Sam's Choice Diet Cola on the table ... .... I am starting to think that a lot of us on this forum are somehow related ... ... I got some deer ribs out to thaw this morning .... gonna do the "dry" seasoning so as to avoid the BBQ sauce .... I too am somewhat of a carnivor ... but I guess I need to add a little "rabbit food" to the diet .... daughter keeps trying to get me to eat more raw broccoli .... I actually love it ... but the wife doesn't love what it does to me ... if you know what I mean .... I tuned up the mountain bike this weekend ... thinking that it will be easier on my knees .... I have inline skates and roller skates for outdoor use and for indoor use ... but worry about the knees again .... I think I will take up cyber jogging again.....

On-line we all weigh the same. You can always lie about your goals, actual weight and what you have lost. I have lost 14 lbs and I don't see where it came from. Still got a gut, chubby cheeks and an insufferable desire for ice cream I never had before. Oh well, I least I don't live in TN.

Tim .. your personal sacrifice to improve the total IQ of both states is both noted and appreciated ..

Try boiling them in crab boil first, then move them to a real gentle smoker.
