Dr. Oz pushes Trump policy for seniors: 'Just work one year longer'

Dr. Mehmet Oz, President Donald Trump's administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), pushed for American seniors to "work one year longer" because he claimed it would benefit the economy.

During a Wednesday White House briefing, Oz blamed low gross domestic product (GDP) growth for rising health care expenditures.

"We will correct that if we can get America to be healthier, because you can't be a wealthy nation without being a healthy nation," he argued. "If we're able to get the average American who today retires on average at age 61, get them just to work one year longer, because they feel so vital, so strong, so bullish about their future, because they're feeding their bodies nutrients that are essential to their high-functioning productivity. We will increase the overall GDP of our nation by trillions of dollars."

"So we will reduce healthcare expenses," he added. "At the same time, we jazz up the U.S. economy with trillions of dollars created by the productivity of American workers."

IT'S TRUE. RETIREMENT IS BAD FOR OLD PEOPLE.

Eventually, congress has been, and will be raising the retirement age to 70, to save that fund. When the original 65 years was stated, very few people lived that long. Fernie, you are even arguing against your own retirement when there won't be any more ss money left. I'm living well from your working now though, thank you.

I like to collect SS but I make too much even after retirement. If I collect, I would pay 50% of my SS income. Not leaving me much from SS income. Not fair.
I was hoping Trump get rid of tax on SS for everyone. :cautious:

If you sit on your butt, then yes it probably means you will die quicker. OTOH, too many people work well past retirement only to go from working to dementia and rotting away for years kept alive by drugs but having a quality of life somewhere between 0 and 1. One heck of lot of people are sick well before retiring. I had 2 first cousins in my graduating high school. One -a CPA- died suddenly of cardiac arrest 3 months before turning 65. The other was in a rest home with dementia at age 62 and died 5 years later curled up in a fetal ball and not knowing anyone.

Lots of people retire and have long happy lives because they are physically active. It's not the work. It is the management of stress and knowing your limits. I've been reading about people who are lost in the wilderness. Many are over 60 and went hiking alone and unarmed. Mauled by bears to falling and breaking an ankle. One lady died of starvation in her tent only a few hundred feet from the Appalachian Trail apparently confused about where the trail was. Know your limits. And stop trying to be 21 again.

Well....you've got to keep moving to keep moving. Hey, I like sitting in my recliner, but that's after a day of productivity where it's well deserved. I can't imagine sitting in a chair all day long.... there's too many things to do.

This is the interesting statement and the crux of the matter though.

Just like an engine with hundreds of thousands of miles, as we age, our gaskets start to leak oil.... the engine doesn't have the compression and the power that it used to. Humans need blood pressure, cholesterol, heart, pain medication, Etc. This is unobtainable for many with the current Healthcare/ medical system.

The Republicans could remain in power if they came up with a universal health care plan to realize Dr Oz's above statement. But that won't happen because we need to conquer Greenland.

After 65 that's not a big problem with Part D I would venture. I can set up a monthly plan to pay out the $2,000 deductible at $167 a month. Or just pay the up front costs and then give 50 cents and a dollar for drugs by fall. It's a choice. I filled a prescription yesterday for $600 plus. But my cap is still $2K.
