FEMA Paying For Generators...

Wendy,

I agree. One for all, and...all for one. Or, something like that?

I've been checking prices ($ ouch!) on big 12+k units so I could run the air. Offer sleep over shelter to poor hot single neighborhood ladies.

You could run a window unit AC on a smaller wattage. Good excuse to crowd them all into one room! ;)

I personally need 6K for the well - about $2000 min. for a good unit!

Don't get a newer (w/in 3 yrs) Briggs & Stratton. Talked to a repair shop guy and he said there is a serious design flaw in them. Seems to be something with the cam shaft lobes. Engines are the hubby's area - I just pass on what I hear.

I've been told the best have Honda or Robbins(sp?) motors; or get a diesel.

The one I ran was was a Honda. I hear from the dealers, they are the best. They are very quiet! There were many generators in my neighborhood. Only one was loud enough to be heard 2 blocks away.

BTW...POWER HAS BEEN RESTORED!! 10 days! Wonder how my bill will look from FPL??

Wendy,

I can only (almost) handle one of you at a time at my age. (If I could only remember the last time?). I think the Blue pill kept falling out?

Chris & Wendy,

Yes...Honda is the only way to go. Buy a complete made by Honda generator if you can. If not available, get one that at least has a Honda engine. Well worth the extra money (about double a Briggs).

My husband's new obsession is one of those whole house backup generators that automatically cuts to propane when the electric goes off. We bought a 5,000 one to replace the 500 we had that runs on gasoline/oil.

I'm trying to convince him not to spend 4/5K on the backup system but just wait and see how many times we go without electric this year. We've only been in this house since February. If I can fill up the water tank and get by - I don't care. The generator we now have will run the refrig and perhaps a fan and that's good enough for me. I kind of like reading by lamp oil.
